Song of the Chapter: Chlorine by Twenty Øne Piløts
The next morning, I woke up and didn't feel Harry sleeping beside me. I quickly jolted out of the bed, throwing on a new outfit for the day. I knew anyone could see my bra through the shirt, but I really didn't care. I made sure the bra wasn't anything bad, so I could just as easily cover it with the cardigan. Anyhow, I threw on my combat boots, before rushing down the stairs looking for Harry. I made my way outside, feeling almost frantic as I looked around. The only reason I even stopped, was when a hand grabbed my arm. I looked over at the person quickly, seeing Rick standing there and looking at me.
"Are you alright?" He asked, his southern drawl fairly noticeable.
"No, where's Harry?" I asked, scared something happened to the little boy I had come to love as my own.
"He's feeding the chickens with Carl and Lori." He replied, as he pointed towards the two boys.
"Oh thank god, I was scared for a minute." I said, as I let out a breath of air.
"It's fine. He's your boy, I understand completely." He commented, before letting go of my arm.
I looked around at all the people in the yard, seeing a few of them crowded around a truck, as Maggie laid a map down in front of them. I would ask what or whom they were looking for, but I didn't want to invade their privacy or anything. As I looked away and turned to walk toward Harry and Carl, Rick stopped me again.
"You didn't happen to see a little girl before Maggie and Glenn found you yesterday, did you?" He asked, causing me to shake my head.
"No, if I did, I would've made her stay with me. Children can't make it in this world on their own, at least, not when they're young." I replied, causing him to sigh.
"Yeah, I know." He breathed, before starting to turn away.
"Why? Are you missing a little girl?" I asked, causing him to look over at me.
"Yeah, lost her in the woods a while ago. Hoping she'd find her way back already. We're going out looking for her, if you'd like to help." Rick said, as I bit my lip.
I wanted to look for the little girl, but I didn't want to leave Harry on his own. I knew he wasn't exactly going to be alone, but I didn't know these people well enough to trust them with my child yet. I didn't know if I'd ever trust them enough. I couldn't even contemplate what I'd do if I lost him. It was too hard to even think about.
"I know you probably don't want to leave your son, but I can guarantee that Lori will watch him and keep him safe." Rick said, causing me to roll my eyes mentally.
"I'll ask Maggie, since Lori needs to watch Carl. I know about his surgery, so he probably needs his mother's undivided attention in case something happens." I replied, trying not to make myself come off as a bitch.
Rick nodded, before he and I walked towards the truck. Maggie looked up at me, before I motioned her to come over. So, she walked around the truck and stood beside me.
"Do you mind watching Harry whilst I help them look for the little girl?" I asked, causing Maggie to shake her head.
"No, I don't mind. I'll have him help me make lunch and stuff for you guys." She replied, and I smiled.
She ran off to get Harry, as Rick and Shane divided up the different parts of the farm. I was told I had to go with Glenn, though it didn't really bother me none. Glenn seemed like a pretty chill guy, at least to me. We walked for a while, nailing purple rags to the trees, before we actually began to conversate.
"I meant to ask, you don't sound southern, where are you from?" He asked, and I giggled.
"I'm from Chicago, but I moved here for a job offer. I had become pretty good at jujitsu, so I was offered a job as a jujitsu instructor here. The pay was well, but I didn't work for long before the world went to shit." I replied, causing Glenn to nod with a slight chuckle.
Soon we headed back to the farm, almost right when everyone else was headed back as well. We all crowded outside of the farm house, before seeing Maggie and Harry carrying out trays of sandwiches. Each sandwich was wrapped in plastic wrap, making sure they'd stay fresh for everyone. Harry walked up to me, carrying a tray with maybe five sandwiches on it.
"Have you eaten yet?" I asked, causing Harry to shake his head.
"He wanted to wait on you." Maggie replied, as she passed out the sandwiches on her tray.
I grabbed one for me and one for Harry off Harry's tray, before he brought one to Daryl, Rick and T-Dog. He handed the tray back to Maggie, before throwing his arms around my legs. He buried his face into my thighs, as I smiled down at him.
"You hungry?" I asked, and he nodded.
"Yes." He replied, as he looked up at me.
"Alright, let's go sit on the porch, yeah?" I said, causing Harry to let go of my legs.
"C'mon Mommy!" He exclaimed, as he ran towards the porch.
He and I sat on the steps, before being joined by Carl. The three of us sat and ate our sandwiches, joking about random little things that came to our minds. If only it could be like this everyday for us all...
