Chapter 51
"Blair?" tawag ni Mama, ang boses ay bakas ng pagtataka. "Why are you just standing there?"
Ngunit hindi pa rin ako gumalaw. It feels as though my feet were stuck in their place. Ang mga mata ko, nakapako sa taong kaharap, hindi makapaniwala sa nakikita.
Ibig sabihin ba ay hindi ako namamalik-mata kanina?
Totoong nakita ko si Damphier?
Mukhang sinundan ng tingin ni Mama ang tinitignan ko. "Oh, you must've been shocked," she said, chuckling. "Do you still remember Damphier? You went to the same university in Spain."
I couldn't speak but I was still able to nod my head.
Mama must have felt that I wasn't going to move anytime sooner, so she stood up and guided me towards my seat, which happened to be beside Damphier.
I didn't know whether that was a good or bad thing. Maybe both. Good thing because I couldn't stand being under his scrutinizing eyes, and a bad thing because we were sitting too close, our elbows almost touching.
But why am I suddenly feeling awkward? It's not as if Damphier and I are strangers.
Napabuntong hininga ako.
I just hope he isn't mad at me for leaving Spain without bidding them goodbye. But if he is... maiintindihan ko naman.
The dinner went smoother than expected. Wala namang nangyaring kakaiba. Kaswal na nag-usap si Damphier at ang mga magulang ko.
Parang tuwang-tuwa pa nga si Mama habang nakikinig sa mga kwento ni Damphier.
Para silang magkaibigan na matagal na nawalay sa isa't isa at ngayon lamang nagkita.
Hindi rin kami nag-usap ni Damphier. Maliban na lang pag may sasabihin o itatanong si Mama tungkol sa mga bagay na may kinalaman sa 'ming dalawa. Pero iyon iyong mga bagay na wala namang malisya.
"We'll be going now," ani Papa. "Damphier, make sure to take my daughter home safe."
Damphier nodded. "I will."
Papa nodded in approval. He turned to me and smiled. I walked towards him and hugged him goodbye. He kissed the top of my head before releasing me. Sumunod naman si Mama na binigyan ako ng isang malawak na ngiti matapos akong pakawalan.
Pinanood naming dalawa ni Damphier ang kotse nilang papaalis. Napatikhim ako nang tuluyan na itong mawala mula sa aming paningin.
Ang daming bagay na bumabagabag sa isip ko ngunit isang tao lang ang maaaring makasagot nito.
"Damphier―"
"Let's talk in the car," he cut me off. "It's cold out here." Atat man ay tumango nalang ako at sumunod na sa kanya.
Once we settled inside his car, hindi na ako nagpaligoy-ligoy pa, agad akong nag pasabog ng mga tanong.
"What's happening? Why are you here? Why did we have this dinner? Were you the man I saw earlier―"
