Chapter 17

"Really?" Mama asked. Rumehistro ang pagdududa sa kanyang mukha; halatang hindi makapaniwala sa sinabi ko. 

I nodded. "Yes, Mama."

Mama blinked. "But how? I didn't know you were part of a theater club?" she asked rhetorically. 

I shook my head. "I'm not, Mama. We had a group performance in one of our classes and our teacher told us that the winning group will be performing during the event," paliwanag ko sa kanya. 

"And you're the protagonist of this so-called play?" she asked, surprise lacing her voice.

I nodded.

She gaped, her face a mask of shock.

I didn't know whether to take her reaction positively or negatively. Alam ko namang magugulat talaga siya dahil ngayon lang ako nag-participate sa mga school event tulad nito, but I didn't expect that she'd be this shocked.

She blinked rapidly. "Am I dreaming?" she spoke in French, asking no one in particular.

Hindi ko na napigilan iyong pagkurba pababa ng labi ko. Na-ooffend na ako dito kay Mama ha.

"You're not." I deadpanned.

"Hold on Chiquita, let me just call your father," she said, fishing her phone from her pocket.

"Ano naman ang sasabihin mo sa kanya?" 

"Mi Corazon," she spoke on the phone before walking away, completely ignoring me and the fact that I spoke in Filipino.

Napairap nalang ako bago bumaba at sumakay sa kotse namin. Nauna na akong ihatid ni Manong papuntang school dahil may dadaanan pa daw si Papa bago siya pumuntang school para sa talk niya mamaya. Ngayon na kasi iyong event at ngayon na din kami mag-peperform para sa play.

"Blair!" Salubong ni Scarlet. Nagulat ako nang hawakan niya ako sa braso at dinala sa CR. 

"Hey, what are you―"

She handed me a dress. "Get yourself dressed," wika niya bago pumasok sa isang cubicle dala ang sariling costume.

Chineck ko iyong damit na binigay niya at napansing iba na ito mula sa damit na una kong sinuot. Filipiñana parin ito pero iba ang style. Mas simple iyong dati kaysa dito. Alam ko ay provided ito ng school mismo kaya hindi na ako nag-reklamo.

Paglabas ko ng cubicle suot ang damit, agad akong pinaupo ni Scarlet sa bandang sink. Nandito narin si Asteria na nakabihis at naka-makeup. Ang karakter niya ay si Andeng, iyong kapatid ni Maria Clara. Samantala, si Scarlet naman ay si Doña Pia Alba, iyong nanay ni Maria Clara.

"Is that really necessary?" I asked, eyeing the makeup kit she was holding.

Scarlet rolled her eyes. "Can you just shut up for a moment?"

I acted like I was zipping my mouth using my fingers. Hindi na ako nag-reklamo nang lagyan niya ako ng makeup. Matapos kasi nung araw na hindi ako naka-sipot sa practice, naging mas masungit na sa 'kin si Scarlet. Wala ako sa mood para masigawan ngayon kaya nanahimik nalang ako.

"Done," she said. 

I faced the mirror and eyed myself.

Kaunti lamang iyong nilagay niyang makeup sa 'kin. Powder, mascara, eyeliner, blush on at lipstick lang. Simple lang iyong makeup pero okay lang sa 'kin since maganda na kasi talaga ako.

Lol.

"Let's go. We'll run through the script one last time bago mag-simula iyong event," sabi ni Scarlet bago naunang umalis.
