Nothing much has changed after Klick signed the mating certificate with Bruce. Initially, the assassin thought thatBruce did it because he had some sort of feelings for him. However, after getting transferred to the omega class and settling into his new life as an omega, nothing much has changed. He was starting to think that Bruce only did it out of kindness and that he had been mistaken. Maybe they were not truly fated mates and the heat he experienced was merely an illusion or a bad awakening.

Bruce apologised to Klick two days after they signed the document and honestly, Klick had never felt so hurt in his entire life. The pain was worse than the fever he suffered for three weeks while learning how to be poison resistant. The treatment at the house was harsh but nothing hurt Klick more than the way Bruce apologised for 'forcing' him to sign a certificate. He thought that they were making some kind of progress after the Carlos incident but perhaps it was his one-sided way of thinking. Klick felt ashamed for expecting something more and Bruce's gentleness was like sandpaper on a fresh wound. He didn't want this.

"He said what?!" the vampire-exorcist was about to lose his mind. Floopy and Syris were just next door so Klick had to shush him. Michael listened quietly at the side but there was a frown on his face.

Ringo apologised and removed Klick's hand from his mouth, lowering his voice as he tried to collect himself.

"Why would he say such a thing?! Didn't you guys sign a mating certificate? Why did he say that he wouldn't treat you any differently from before?"

The blind bat demon shook his head sadly. He wanted to cry but the tears wouldn't fall. "I don't know," his voice was small and broken.

Ringo looked at his partner and Michael walked over to pat the assassin on the shoulder. As an alpha, he knew what he was seeing and smelling. The protective pheromones that Bruce draped all over Klick was very hostile. It was a clear warning to all other alphas that this omega was his. There was no way Bruce didn't like Klick if he was getting all territorial and possessive. Hence, there could only be one explanation.

"I don't think he hates you," he told Klick. "However, he's confused."

Hearing the vampire lord's explanation, Klick turned his head towards the source of the voice. "What do you mean?"

Michael gave Ringo a look and the exorcist understood at once. With a big smile, Ringo slung his arm over Klick to comfort him.

"It is what it is. Bruce is a musclehead. He doesn't understand what's going on inside him yet so we'll just have to show him. Say, you're very sure that both of you are fated mates, right?"

Klick paused. "Actually, I'm not too sure. I thought my heat was triggered when Bruce broke the door down. Carlos went crazy and tried to mark my neck back then so I'm not sure if it was Carlos or Bruce who triggered my awakening heat now."

Ringo hummed. From how he looked at it, Klick's first heat only happened after Bruce went crazy on Carlos. It was still strange to him why Klick didn't immediately feel the pull between fated mates when they met. Ringo himself somehow had a feeling it was Michael but he couldn't confirm it because he was too busy trying to catch Shen Long's attention back then.

"Do you feel any different when you're with Bruce compared to when you're with other alphas?"

Klick shook his head. "I'm a recessive omega. Even after the awakening heat, I don't feel any different. An alpha's pheromones don't affect me."

Michael wasn't too sure about that. The only reason why other alpha pheromones don't affect the assassin was due to the constant layer of Bruce's pheromones warding off any other potential alphas. Klick might have gotten so used to the comforting smell of Bruce around him that he no longer noticed it.

"In that case, we can only run an experiment," Michael told the omegas. "If you want to know if Bruce is truly your fated mate, you must replicate a similar incident to that day. We need to trigger Bruce's anger so that his alpha pheromones explode. An omega's heat is triggered in the presence of their fated mates only when an alpha demands it. Normally, we alphas control it very well. Unless provoked, it doesn't affect others around us."

Klick thought about it and under Ringo's persuasion, he agreed to their plan. It was a fairly simple one but Klick felt very uneasy.

"What if the plan fails and Bruce ends up hating me?"

Ringo tutted. "Won't happen. I'll put my family name on the line to bet that he wouldn't hate you. Jealousy will trigger his inner alpha's territorial instinct. When that happens, you can tell who is causing your heat. Only fated mates can trigger each other's heats so you would know at once. Oh, you should still take your heat medication just in case. If the heat is triggered by your fated mate, the medication will reduce its effects. You don't want it spiralling out of control. It's dangerous."

Klick listened to their plan and agreed. He still didn't know if doing such a thing was a good idea. A part of him felt thrilled but the other side of him felt very guilty as if he was doing something very wrong. Was it even right to test his mate? Sure, they might only be mates on paper for now but Klick didn't want to hurt Bruce's feelings.

"I'll send an invitation to Bruce tomorrow after class. You should skip class early to come over so that we can prepare. That way, when Bruce comes after the end of his lesson we can get straight to the action."

Michael didn't really like the idea of seeing his mate getting frisky with another person but Ringo assured him that he would be doing it in front of him and not behind his back. Besides, it was to help out a dense couple so Michael agreed. For some reason, a consensual play between two omegas turned him on and Klick quickly left when he smelled the change in the air. Everyone knew how kinky vampires can be and Klick didn't want to stay to find out.

As he left, Klick could feel his heart in his mouth. He didn't know why he was trying to burn the bridge he had but the assassin felt as if this was the right thing to do.

If he couldn't have all of Bruce, he would rather not have anything at all.
