"Sirius." Remus called. "What are you trying to do ?"
The man peaked from behind the doorway. His boyfriend frantically searching for something. But his attention was on the pile of cigarette boxes on the table.
"I'm trying to find my pack." He replied.
"I didn't know you have.. this many." Remus picked a green box with mint leaves on it. "Wait why are you searching my bookshelf ?"
"I'm a dog Remus. I hide my bones."
Huh, not wrong. Remus thought. "You want to get rid of these ?"
"Yes."
What ? "I'll get a bag for them then."
Remus slipped to their kitchen and dug for a trash bag. It was odd. Sirius was notorious for smoking. It somehow became his signature style; A punk leather jacket bad boy who smokes and rides motorcycles.
"Here. If you don't mind me asking... why'd you want to stop ? So suddenly ?"
Sirius' memories went back to last week when found Remus coughing his lungs out. His voice gone hoarse but he'll never say it to Sirius' face. His heart physically burned the image in his head. His sweetheart coughing and clutching his chest because of him smoking.
"I just.. I don't want you to be a passive smoker. I mean it was okay when we didn't share a house. Now that we do.. I don't want you getting sick."
Remus felt his lips curve, he pecked his cheek softly. "Thank you for caring about me. I'll read up about withdrawal symptoms, see what I can do to help."
Good Lord, I think I'm falling in love. Sirius thought.
That very night, Sirius slept in cold sweat. His breathing was shallow and he was too nervous to fall asleep. He paced around the living room, trying to tire himself out.
"Sirius ? What are you doing ?" Remus asked.
"I can't do this Remus ! I need a smoke right now ! I can't sleep and all I think about is going to the store and get a pack I just need a tiny whif-"
"Sirius you have stopped smoking for 6 hours ! That's a crazy mile stone. Now, if you go to sleep, that's 8 unconscious hours under your belt. What's 8 plus 6 ?" Remus' palms rubbing his arms.
"A smoke ?"
Remus sighed. "No, that means 14 hours. That's already more than half a day. Remember what I promised for your first 24 hours ?"
Sirius' eyes lit up. "Oh ! The date ! You'll take me wherever I want !"
"Exactly." He leaned to kiss Sirius' forehead. "Let's wipe the sweat and calm you down."
They both climbed into bed. Sirius busied himself; trying to get as close as possible to Remus. The taller boy didn't mind, he hugged him even tighter.
The next morning, Remus was greeted with a bad mood Sirius. He grew annoyed it with everything. The sound of birds chirping, the remote that refused to work, the wet bathroom floor and many more.
Sirius sat for breakfast with the fowlest face. He might just be the Grinch's son. Remus pushed a plate of eggs to him. "It's part of withdrawing. You'll feel annoyed and brain dead at some point."
He muttered a thanks before going with his fork. He looks like he's attempting to murder the eggs. "God I'm not even mad ! Nothing's making me mad but I just am ! What is wrong with me?"
Sirius threw his face in his palms and sucked in a breath. Remus gently pushed his palms away, giving him a peck. "It's normal. Nothing's wrong with you. It's just the nicotine leaving your system. Do you want to stay home ? I can call in sick for you ?"
"Yeah I'd rather do that than get fired."
Remus nodded and left to get dressed. "Don't forget about our date !"
Well, at least that brought his mood up.
***
Sirius can't do it. His brain won't stop nagging. "A smoke, A smoke, a smoke." It chants. He opened the cupboard with Remus' stash of candy.
Lollipop after lollipop, he felt his teeth rot. The sweet mango taste did nothing to hold back the urge though it still helped with wanting to bite something.
"I'm going crazy !"
Sirius laid on the floor, gnawing the stupid red candy. So he did what he thought was the best way out, turn into a dog.
And that's how Remus found him when he came home. The giant, black dog biting on a carrot. "Sirius, honey c'mon." He dropped his bag and knelt next to it.
Sirius changed immediately and lunged for his boyfriend. Making their lips meet in a fiery kiss. "I can't think anymore." He murmured to Remus' lips.
It was definitely not the welcome home surprise Remus was expecting. But making out on the floor ? Remus wasn't against it.
"Is this how you'll be for the next 6 months ?" Remus paused as he pushed himself to their front door.
"Is that a complaint ?" Sirius squinted his eyes playfully.
"NO !" A fond smile. "Of course not. Why would I complain pshh what a thought !"
Naturally, Remus finds himself trapped between his bookshelf and Sirius. Or between the kitchen counter and Sirius. He'd come in late to work because someone took half an hour off his mornings.
But all the hardwork paid off. Months later, Sirius hates 2 things now, lollipops and cigarettes. He gags at the sight of Cuppa Cup candy, remembering the countless days chewing on it to forget his urges.
He found himself a new hobby now, gardening ! Or buying potted plants and covering every inch of their house with them. Remus enjoyed this verg much. He liked seeing Sirius so into learning about some herb.
When he's done working outside, he'd come in smelling like earth and lavenders and rosemary. If it wasn't for the dirt clinging on to his skin, Remus would've already snuggled in.
"Look Remus ! My sunflowers are growing !"
The professor looked up from his book with the fondest smile. "Yea I see them. They look pretty like you."
Sirius hid his face behind the giant flower he was holding. "Aaa stop it ! You're making me blush !"
Remus walked over to where Sirius was in their yard. He moved the loud petals and smiled down at Sirius. Then he winced.
"Good Merlin ! It's blistering hot ! We're going inside right now."
Sirius let himself be dragged into their home. He was proud of himself. There might be people he couldn't save and that was out of his control. But Remus ? He'd go through withdrawal symptoms to keep him by his side.
Note: I'm not romanticizing addiction, even if it's a common one. I'm trying to highlight Sirius' motivation to actually stop his addiction. The withdrawal symptoms I mentioned were "friendlier" to talk about but the symptoms go a long way. So my point, please don't start something you can't stop :( don't do drugs or alcohol or smoking for the "aesthetic" there's nothing aesthetic about hurting yourself :(((
