Based of one of my favorite Greek myths, Orpheus and Eurydice
as you can tell, I'm on a Greek myth/legend marathon here whoop
And I just finished reading the Song of Achilles, now you all shall cry
***I was home the moment the Argonaut's hull hit the sandy beach. One by one heroes started to descend. We were glorious in our quest, our smiles were of pure pride. I watched as their wives and children come to them. I could only smile, their homes were people.
The leather bag on my back weighed lighter than when I left the island with it. My sandals were torn around the edges from battles but it was all part of the adventure. From my side, the smell of bread and cheese tempted me. Perhaps rest could wait for a while.
I was not prepared for what I saw. He had brown splotches dirtying his hands and sweat dripping down his chest. Indeed it was a hot summer's day. Dark black hair falling over his eyes made me crave to see them more.
"Are those for sale ?" My question hung in the air.
I really had no purpose of a vase. Flowers were a waste of gold. Too beautiful to keep, too fast they wilt. I asked nonetheless. I watched, with the Aegean waves in my stomach, as the man looked up from his craft.
"They are. Could I sell you one ?"
I dreamt of songs and poetry with his voice. His eyes were like molten silver. They hold the intensity of Zeus' stormy clouds yet the gentleness of Athena. His tongue darted on his lips and I wondered if they taste like honey dipped strawberries, sweet as they looked.
"Y-yes. Please."
He smiled and I thought I was looking at Paris prince of Troy, the most charming man in the world. He asked for a moment to get my vase ready. If he asked for an eternity, I would've waited until then.
"May I ask your name ?"
The rose on his cheeks turned deeper red, like a girl's lips stained with paint. He gives me the pottery.
"Sirius. You may call me Sirius."
I offered the gold on my palm for him to take. But it seems the world slowed for us, my eyes drowned in his and the calluses of his palms. Sirius. He is named after the stars and I understood why. My hand already misses his when he pulled away.
"I'm Remus. Goodbye Sirius."
He nods his head and I walked off with a vase I didn't need and a name I'll never forget.
***
Indeed, Sirius was a star. I knew not to bother him at work. Would it be called bothering if my own businesses coincidentally crossed paths with his ? Perhaps the Fates were playing on my side.
When I pass to man ships on the beach, he waves his clay covered hand and calls my name. I have never looked excited for the day as I have when he's there.
The sun is setting on the horizon as I finished tying ropes for the ships. My heart sank remembering I might not say hello to Sirius on my way back today. Not to worry, there is another day.
"Remus !"
I turned to find him standing there in white linen. His ebony hair drifting with the wind. The orange and reds washed over his ivory skin and I'm sure Aphrodite blessed me today.
"I have made you something." He says as I run to his side on the sand. It was a musical instrument, a lyre.
"Sirius, you must know, my hands are those of a sailor. The only strings I pluck are ropes of a sail."
Sirius laughs. "I'll teach you then."
I don't remember how long we sat there on the sand. It didn't matter. He taught me the language of the Muses and yet I was busy studying him. He plays me a song I've never heard of, it was as beautiful as the player.
