Oliver Thomas - District Two
"Nine people left," answers Maverick. "No ten people," protests Calvin. "No it's nine," Jonah and I say together. "No it's ten. Five people died the first day, three people have died since then," Calvin says, I shake my head. Calvin can be cocky and annoying and a know-it-all sometimes.
"It's nine, because on the first day Rover, Roger, Sawyer, Basil, and Russell died. Since then, four people have died. Finn, Cliff, Mitchell and Theo," I correct. "Nope it's not nine," Calvin mutters. I turn away from him, then turn back and open my mouth to say something back. Calvin shouldn't get his way and the last word all the time.
I'm about to say something when Jonah shakes his head at me. I roll my eyes. I put my elbows on my knees and look out at the arena.
"Well what should we do?" Calvin asks. I don't really hear him so I ask what he said. "I asked what should we do?!" Exclaims Calvin. "God I didn't hear you," I say. "Well listen next time," says Calvin. "Calm down!" I tell him. He glares at him.
"Okay stop fighting guys," Jonah tells us. "Yeah we're supposed to be allies." Adds Maverick. "Fine, sorry," I say. "Yeah sorry," echoes Calvin.
"So what should we do?" Asks Calvin again. "I don't know, there's not much to do," Maverick points out. "Yeah," Jonah and I agree. "We could look around for supplies or animals to hunt down," suggests Calvin, and then he gets up and begins walking down the hill. Maverick, Jonah, and I roll our eyes. This happens a lot. Calvin will come up with a "brilliant" idea and then he'll just start going without the rest of us agreeing. Whatever.
We stand up, Maverick grabs his spear, and we follow Calvin down the hill. When we reach the bottom, Calvin turns around to face the three of us.
"Let's split into groups of two. One group will search for animals while the other other can search the Cornucopia for supplies. I'll be with Jonah and then you guys can be together," Calvin says. "Clear?" "Clear," the three of us say.
Maverick and I walk over to the Cornucopia. At first, we don't see anything. But then we search deeper and find a small pack filled with some food, two packs of matches, some plastic, and a few hats and gloves. We take the pack and continue looking, but don't see anything.
"Hey Maverick we should head ba-," I stop talking when I see Trevor, Jay, Pierce, and Cedar walking towards us. Maverick and I look at each other worriedly as they approach us.
"What are you doing?" Maverick questions them, gripping his spear tightly. "We could ask you the same thing," says Trevor, cocking his head to the side. "Okay then. We're looking for supplies," I reply. "Oh really?" Asks Trevor. "Yes really," Maverick and I say. I'm annoyed with this guy.
"Well. Why don't you give us the supplies and we'll get out of here," Trevor says. "I don't think so," I say. "Give us the bags and we'll get out of here," Trevor repeats, this time slower. "No," I repeat, just as slow. He makes a move to grab the pack out of my hands when Maverick raises his spear and throws it at Pierce, Cedar, and Jay. It misses them but Trevor gets angry and whips out his knife.
By now I'm fighting Jay and Maverick is fighting Trevor. I shove Jay to the ground and then Pierce comes charging at me. He punches me in the face and then I shove him as well. Cedar runs over to help him and Jay. "Maverick let's go!" I shout.
I begin running towards the hill, assuming Maverick is behind me. It's not till I'm almost halfway up when I realize Maverick isn't behind me. I begin to panic. I run back down the hill and back to the place where we were fighting with Trevor and his pack. Maverick is lying there on the ground, clutching his arm. I rush down to his side.
"Maverick are you okay?! What happened?" I ask. He's crying and clearly in pain. He points to his right arm. I lean over to look. I see a deep, bloody gash right there. I cover my mouth with my hands.
"Was if Trevor?" I question. Maverick nods. "Let's walk back up the hill and show Jonah and Calvin," I suggest. I help him up and put one of his arms around my shoulder. We walk back up the hill, slowly and surely. When we reach the top, Calvin and Jonah are sitting there.
"What took so long?!" Calvin asks. He looks annoyed. Then he sees Maverick. He expressions softens. "What happened?" Oliver and him both ask. I help Maverick sit down and then I sit as well.
"We were looking for stuff around the Cornucopia when Trevor and his gang came up to us. We kind of got into a fight. I was fighting Jay, Pierce, and Cedar while Maverick fought Trevor. While they were fighting Trevor cut Maverick with his knife." I show them both the cut. "That look pretty bad," remarks Calvin. "It could become infected in the next 24 hours if not treated. That kind of deep gash gets a bad infection," Jonah says. We look at him in surprise. How does he know that?!
"How do you know that?" Calvin asks. Jonah shrugs, embarrassed. "My mum is a healer. She teaches me about the cuts and infections and how to treat them," he says. We nod, impressed.
"Why don't we search our bags for medicine or cream?" Suggests Calvin. Jonah and I nod. We walk over to our bags. I hand one to Calvin, another to Jonah, and the last one I take myself. We search every little inch of the bags. And we really search. This is Maverick we're talking about. He does a lot for our alliance. He can use a spear and has good strengths, but more importantly he's a really good friend and he keeps everybody smiling and happy even when you're in the Games. If someone's upset or they miss their family, he'll sit with them and be there for them and be a shoulder to cry on. He's a really good ally.
I continue searching. I stop when I hear Calvin yell out. Jonah and I rush over to him. He holds up a container. "It's cream," he says. "Open it," instructs Jonah. He does and then hands it to Jonah. "We can use it," he announces. We rush over to Maverick and spread the cream all over the cut.
"What do we do now?" I ask. "We wait. In the morning, we can apply some more," Jonah tells us. We nod. "What do you want to have for supper?" Asks Calvin. "Do we have any meat?" I question. "I don't think so, but I can go get some." Calvin grabs his bow and arrow and heads off.
"Be careful," Maverick calls after him. Jonah and I look over in surprise. "Maverick!" We exclaim, rushing over to him. "How are you?" Jonah and I ask. Maverick smiles slightly. "Fine," he replies. We sit beside him and wait for Calvin to come back. After a while, we start to worry. I look over the top of the hill. No Calvin in sight.
"He's probably in the forest guys," Maverick says to Jonah and I. We nod and continue looking to see if Calvin's coming. I feel relieved when I see Calvin walking up the hill. "What took so long?" Questions Jonah. "Sorry bout that, it was hard to find animals," explains Calvin. "What'd you get?," I ask. "A couple of turkeys." Calvin holds them up. I get out a match and start a fire. We skin and then cook the meat, then divide it up evenly. We go to sleep soon after that.
In the morning, I'm the first one awake. I shake Jonah and Calvin awake as well. I decide to check on Maverick. He's very still when I reach him. I roll him onto his back. That's when I realize his eyes are closed and he's not moving a muscle.
"Guys come here," I say to Calvin and Jonah, my voice wavering. They hurry over. "I think Maverick might be...um..." I trail off but I think Jonah and Calvin know what I'm trying to say. Jonah rushes to the other side of Maverick while Calvin kneels beside me.
"A cannon hasn't gone off yet," Jonah points out. "True," I agree. "It could've gone off in the night through," says Calvin. Jonah and I's faces fall. That could be true. "Well how do we know if he's really dead or not?" I ask. Jonah checks his pulse. He shakes his head. "No pulse."
Jonah and I fall silent. "So he's really dead?" Calvin asks, his voice trembling. "I think so," Jonah answers quietly. All three of us kneel at Maverick's side and we all cry. I miss him so much.
