Zavrina POV
She was so glad membership intake was over, now she could hang freely with her new soror and they could get some work done. She already knew she worked well with Jill because they worked together as President and Vice President of the Black Student Union last year. Though Lark was still President of BSU, MAX would be a major focus in her life now.
Lark came in ready to do work.
"So the first thing I want to do as a MAX is work on my idea for a program helping students with learning disabilities," she went on at the first meeting after she crossed just two days ago. "Remember I talked about it at my interview?"
"Of course we remember that," Sherry said with a chuckle.
Lark passed out a typed-up sheet to the ladies. She grinned when she saw it was the program already detailed out. Lark wanted to start with incoming freshmen, too afraid to speak up that they had a learning disability, and then they would expand from there. It was not simply a tutoring program, it was more of an assistance program, to help them navigate college and find all the resources that were offered to them.
"Sherry, I know you already tutor, so I would like your help with this project," Lark stated. "Maybe you can identify more students than we could reach."
"Of course," Sherry said, jotting down some notes. "Next item on the agenda..."
Zavrina raised her eyebrows at Sherry. She knew what her pause was about. They were supposed to discuss representation at Alpha Phi Alpha's Ms. Black n Gold Ball. In previous years, they always had a soror enter the talent pageant, and it was going to be Sherry this year, but asking her to work with her asshole ex was a bit much. It was two weeks away now, they needed to decide if they would enter it.
Jill jumped in. "I did it last year, and right after I crossed and sooo..."
"I did it my sophomore year." Not that it was any fun. She was at the beginning of the off-and-on with Kenyon at the time, and they were on a strong off. He was openly seeing someone else at the time, and she was worried she would see him on her arm at the ball. Of course, Kenyon never brought a date, but she did not know that then.
"I'm not doing it," Sherry stated plainly.
"Fair enough." Zavrina looked to Lark.
"Why are you looking at me? Never ever will I be in some little beauty pageant."
"It's not a beauty pageant. It's a scholarship pageant. You strut on stage, answer some questions, do a talent, and they judge you. If you place first, second, or third, you win a cash prize that we add to our scholarship fund."
"It was fun," Jill stated. "The girls were all cool, I mean they were with me. You have all the sorority ladies, some non-Greeks, we had a ball. I didn't even place, but it was cool."
"I got second place because stupid Trinity, I know she cheated."
"How?" Sherry asked.
"I don't know, but I know."
Lark laughed at her.
"Maybe, okay, I'll try it, but you all are helping me pick a talent. This is short notice, you guys should have warned me on line."
Zavrina smiled. "That's how they got me. That's how we got big mouth over here. MAX ladies always represent."
While Lark became busy working on both her MAX project and participating in the Black n Gold pageant, she was able to relax more and spend more time with Kenyon. Her room now was their perfect hideout and Kenyon was a pro at slipping out unseen.
