Zavrina POV
It was nice to be back in her room on campus. Staying with her aunt and uncle was fine, but in the residence hall, she felt like she was on her own. It was the in-between of adulthood. Not having to worry about rent or bills, but not having parents or adults watch over you like a hawk.
Aunt Jossie knew about Kenyon, so she asked a hundred million questions about him. She said he was one of the few African American students on campus that she did not personally recruit. Most of them, like her, were on some sort of scholarship, specifically the Minority Student Leadership scholarship that she had for the last four years. Each year she had to reapply with an essay and each year she was awarded the scholarship.
Judging by the car Kenyon drove and the way he was balling it at the hotel, money was not an issue with him. Must be nice. Maybe his mother left him a nice amount of insurance money that paid for college.
Wasn't her business.
Jossie tried getting her to ask Kenyon over for the holidays, but he said he had family he was spending it with. Again, what family? He said he did not get along with his father and new wife. He didn't have any siblings, so maybe he had aunts and cousins.
They talked nearly every day on the phone and she missed him. The first thing he did when he came into town was invite her over to the Alpha house. All the guys were not back yet, so they could have the place to themselves.
Per their ritual, he picked her up down the street from her building. Kenyon looked good enough to eat, hair pulled back in a man bun, dressed in a Chicago Bull jersey and jeans. He licked his lips and grinned at her and she felt all mushy inside.
"What you gonna do to me tonight?"
"What do want me to do?"
"Nah girl, it's what Imma do to you," he said, driving off. "Three damn weeks without you, oh it's gonna be on."
It better not be one damn Alpha in that house because she wanted to scream. She wanted to go all night. Technically she had no curfew tonight, so she had no worries about that. She could stay out all night and all morning.
Soon as Kenyon pulled up to the house and parked in their backlot, he groaned.
"What?"
"That's Cory's car. He wasn't here earlier, no one was."
Sure enough, she recognized his car as well, she had been in it many times on their trips back to St. Louis. "I guess we can't be loud."
Kenyon had not turned the car engine off, deciding if he wanted to stay. "Wanna just go to a hotel? I don't know if I can be quiet Z."
"Boy, it's cool, don't spend all your little money on me. We've been doing this for a while and no one catches us."
"But his room is right next to mine, when I scream out your name, he's gonna hear me."
She laughed. "Then don't say my name."
Kenyon went to the back door first, opened it, looked around, and then waved her in. That meant no one was in the kitchen area, and the stairs were there that led upstairs to the bedrooms. The house was totally quiet, so maybe Cory was not even there, just parked his car. Maybe he was with Trinity who lived off-campus.
Either way, they took the stairs silently, with Kenyon making sure the hall was clear. Seeing no one, Zavrina made a quick dart to his room with Kenyon behind her. They were almost clear when she heard Cory's door swing open.
Her instincts made her immediately duck down on the side of Kenyon's bed.
"Hey man!" Cory yelled out to him in the hall.
