Sherry Donovan POV
"I love you."
"I love you more!"
"I love you the most!"
"I love you infinity!" Sherry said with a giggle, hugging her boyfriend of nearly a year now. They sat at the Student Union in what was the unofficial "Black corner" where all the minority students hung between classes. There were not many at the predominantly white institute, but the few hundred were pretty close.
Because of the small number compared to the over twenty thousand students, all the Black students knew each other and their business. Everyone knew Sherry Donovan was in love with Donte Jordan.
"Senior year, we're going out with a bang, right?" Donte was a hottie to most women on campus, so she considered herself lucky. She loved flaunting the fact that he was with her versus any other girl on campus.
"Oh yeah! We have each other and I have my sorority, being President and all. You have your fraternity, being Vice President of course. We're going to be so busy but we will make time for each other, right?"
"Honeybee, you know I got you," he said, kissing her neck, not caring that other students were around.
That's why she loved him. He was on her level of affection and she needed lots of it. They hooked up last year at the start of the year and had been inseparable since. Donte Jordan was a top catch at ISU. Tall at six feet three, athletic build from playing football, though he was not on the team this year, brown-skinned, nice full lips, and smart too. She was not so shallow she was only into him for his looks. He was one of few Black men on campus with a 3.8 G.P.A., in the national honor society and in the leading fraternity on campus, Alpha Phi Alpha.
"So, what do the ladies of MAX have planned for this year?" he asked.
"Oh you know, our little sorority is so different than all the rest of you. We don't have the numbers for the big parties or big events, but trust we will do it big under my helm. We have Sister Circle monthly activities, our tutoring program and we are going to do the step show in the Spring for sure."
"Not all that, you know what I mean, you ladies having a line?"
"Boy! Are you trying to get all up in MAX business? You know I'm not asking you if Alpha doing intake. That's your business."
"We are, and I'm Dean of Pledges, and I'll tell you whatever you want...long as you keep that on the low."
"First of all, I don't need to know Alpha business, I know not to ask. Why are you asking about MAX business?"
"Because...you ladies should have a line, boost your numbers. There are a lot of interested girls who-"
"Un-unh! Stop! We're selective for a reason. It's not about the numbers for us. Quality over quantity."
"Well, what if there is someone interested but you all capping it because-"
She cut him off with a hand. She loved Donte but he was crossing the line having this conversation. She took her sorority business seriously. She only pledged last fall herself, so she was not even a year in. A neophyte as they called it. She was elected President because there were only three of them left on campus right now. Also, she was the most qualified of the three, no shade to her sorors who could have handled the job but their hands were full with other things.
"Donte, if you know of anyone interested, they go through the process like anyone else. Now," she said, kissing him. "Enough with that, what's happening this weekend?"
"You know Alphas get the first weekend, so you know it's going to be lit."
"We shall see," she said, just as her soror Zavrina walked over holding a large Starbucks coffee cup in one hand, her iPhone in another, with her little tiny self.
