Sherry POV
Her soror whom she looked up to, respected as her elder, and admired for her leadership skills, was nothing more than another notch on Kenyon Barnes's belt.
How could she stoop so low?
Of all the boys on campus, he was bottom of the totem pole for any female that wanted a serious boyfriend. Sure, he looked like he could be in magazines or movies with his good looks, but that was not everything. Looks were not that important when they were attached to a snake.
At the time of the big MAX/Kenyon blow-out, she was a freshman herself and not in the loop of the Greek life comings and goings. She was not even sure she wanted to be a MAX freshman year, she was weighing her options. She recalled thinking Kenyon Barnes was the type of guy you played with once or twice, never take seriously.
She never crushed on him like her line sister. Good looks did not impress her.
How could Zavrina be with him for that long? How did she do that and no one knew? Hell, that made her better at hiding secret lives than Donte.
She could barely keep things straight with her new life. Now that she was teaching at the Junior High, she had to cut her tutor hours. Of course, she was not tutoring Taj this semester.
"We can still study together, boo."
"If I'm not too busy."
"I hope you make time for me, babe." He kissed her while they sat eating lunch in the Student Union.
Never one to shy from public displays of affection, but she wasn't feeling it today, so she moved away from him.
"What's wrong babe?"
"Nothing. I just have a lot on my mind is all." She stood from her chair. As much as she cared for Taj, she felt like she was going through the motions with him. She wanted to make things work with them, but she needed more time. Maybe she was holding off having sex with him because it was too soon to get back into another relationship. "I need to go, I have some things to do."
"Okay, but can we hook up later today?" He stood, taking her hand. "Sher, I know you think you're not ready for another relationship, but I'm not any other guy. I want to be the man you need."
"Taj, you are. You're great. I'm just..." She didn't know what was going on in her mind. Taj was a catch to any girl not blind. Never caring about looks, Taj would not have been her type in the past. He happened to be there when she needed someone.
"It's cool, I'm here whenever you need to talk. I care so much about you." He kissed her and she should have felt overjoyed that she had a guy that was crazy for her, but she didn't. She walked away from him without another word.
What was she doing? Before the whole Donte thing happened she was having thoughts of Taj in ways she shouldn't have, and now she had him and she was not being a very good girlfriend. It was beyond him being the rebound guy. It was not the fact that he was the one that opened her eyes about Donte.
She knew what it was.
Instead of spending her free time getting some much-needed work done, she got in her car and drove off-campus. She stopped at an all too familiar apartment complex. She sat in her car debating on what she would do.
Before second-guessing herself, she exited her car and headed to his apartment door, and knocked.
What if she was there?
She did not know if she would be able to control herself if she saw her again. Donte opened the door and did not say anything at first. They took in each other, and she knew she became overwhelmed with the feelings she still felt, she wondered if he did as well.
"Come in," he said, letting her inside.
Everything was as she remembered. Not as if she expected it to be redecorated as if that little girl moved in or something. It was neat and smelled good. Was she coming by and helping him clean? Did she do all the things she used to do for him?
"Sherry, I'm glad you came over. I think if we just talk-"
"Did you even love me?"
"Why would you ask that? Of course, I loved you. I still love you." He moved to touch her cheek, but she stepped away from him. "And the fact that you're over here now, I know you still love me."
"I just need answers."
"Anything you want."
She could not say anything for a moment, just looked at him. She thought of her future husband. The way she had their life planned out and now...
"Was I not good enough? Did I do something wrong? I'm not pretty enough? Not good enough in bed?"
"Babe, you're incredible in bed. That's not it. That thing with Essence was a mistake. I love you and want you back. We can make this work again."
She let out a snort. "I don't know about that."
"Look, we can get married after graduation. I still have your ring. I'll move to Chicago and go to grad school. Everything can get back on track, just like you want."
That did sound nice. No matter what Donte had done, she still loved him. The feelings would not go away no matter how she tried.
"I missed you over break and then when I saw you and Taj...that hurt."
"Sorry, was I supposed to ask you first if I should move on? I mean, you moved on while we were in a relationship, so-"
"Okay, I fucked up!" he shouted out, waving his hands up in the air. "That's what you want to hear? Essence had been coming on to me since she was sixteen, she had a crush on me, and our parents wanted us together...but I didn't want that. And then when she came to college here, we kind of just...I don't know how to explain it...it meant nothing...I swear."
"Is it over?"
He missed a beat before he answered that. "What is over?"
"You and her."
Donte moved close to her and she wondered if she could resist him. This was a bad idea coming over here.
"It never was anything honeybee, I love you. Only you."
How could she believe him? How could she trust him?
Donte was super sexy to her, and everything she wanted in a man, and she enjoyed their time together the last year. Why did he have to destroy her plans for a happily ever after and cheat? Could she take him back after everything? Maybe she could forgive and forget.
No! She screamed in her head and moved away from him. Taj was just as attractive, just as focused and determined. Taj may not have a high GPA, but he was smart and worked hard to maintain his above 3.0 GPA. He worked with Jossie in the admissions office, wanted to use his degree in journalism too and he wanted some of the same things she wanted. That included marriage, which she learned from their many talks.
Taj may be the man she was destined to be with...yet, the man standing before her held her heart in a tight hold, not releasing it even after he hurt her.
Donte moved even close to her, and she could feel his desire for her and her panties were wet instantly. She had yet to have sex with Taj and had no clue why she was waiting. She should leave, call Taj, and take him to bed to see if he could satisfy her the way Donte had.
"Let me make love to you Sher, I promise I'll make it all right." He kissed her and she kissed back, grabbing the front of his jeans and unsnapping them.
Sex was just sex, right? It didn't mean anything.
A/N: Oh No! 🤦🏾♀️
