Sherry POV
Now that they were back in school, and people were over the big breakup between Donte and her, she could move on.
She was moving on with Taj.
It happened over winter break. Taj never gave up on her, always calling and texting just to talk to her, just to say hello, just to talk about simple things. He talked about his family, his single mother, and that he was number three of five kids and they all were close. His family did not have much, but he said they never worried about what they didn't have, they made do with little.
His father was killed when he was ten, his mother was a manager at a Walmart. His older brother dropped out of high school and worked odd-end jobs, and at twenty-seven, lived at home. His sister was twenty-four and lived with a boyfriend. He was the first to go to college. His younger two sisters were still in high school, but he was hoping they would attend college as well.
She never felt privileged, her parents did not have much but between her and her two older brothers, they had plenty.
Taj also did not date a lot. If he was being honest, because she still was dealing with trust issues, he only had one serious girlfriend back in high school. He claimed he did not sleep around and had only been with three girls ever.
She still did not believe that, but either way, she did not care. Long as he treated her right, and did not add to the body count while they were together. She had more than three on her body count.
"I feel like the luckiest guy at this school." Taj held her hand as he walked her to class. This was their first outing together and she knew people would be shocked he had a new boyfriend, but that wasn't her problem.
"You are lucky." Having lost Donte, lost her two best friends, and having a new boyfriend was a refreshing start. Maybe all the things that happened with her and Donte were only to make way for something greater with Taj.
A year younger than her, he was only a junior, but he was making his mark at ISU as Vice President of Epsilon Upsilon, and also working in the Admissions office with Jossie recruiting new students. A journalism major, Taj also submitted articles as a freelancer to the school paper. He was more her speed with how focused he wanted things in his life.
"I know I keep saying this, but I'm not the type of brother you're used to. But I can show you better than tell you." He pulled her in his arms and kissed her right there in the hallway in front of her class.
Good thing she did not mind public displays of affection. She loved it. It made her smile that he wanted to share that they were together and happy.
"Have a good day back sweetie pie."
Now that is how she liked a man to treat her.
*********************
After she was done with her classes for the day, she had an interview about a teacher's aid job at the Junior High school that was right off-campus. She did not even have to drive, she could walk from her last class to the school.
She wanted some hands-on teaching before she began job searching soon.
They loved her and she was hired and could start that week.
She wanted to celebrate so she group texted her sorors to let them know the good news.
MY LS IS THE BEST!! CONGRAAAAATTTTSS!!
Let's party up soror Teacher friend!...Z
Congrats soror. Are we meeting up at the house later tonight?
Yes! I'll have drinks...none for my LS.
HEY!! I'll be 21 in two weeks. Let me sip
In two weeks we will let you drink all you want. C'ya!
As she made the trek back to the MAX house, she ran into the one person on campus she would rather never see again.
"Hey, Sherry." Donte walked up to her looking as good as ever, but she ignored him. He did not seem to get the picture that there was no chance at forgiveness, that they would ever get back together.
"Sherry, come on, I know you're not over me that fast because I'm sure not over you. I still love you."
She scoffed at that but continued to ignore him. The audacity of this boy. Was he still sleeping with that chick Essence? What was going on with their relationship and why did he keep her in secret now that they had broken up? It wasn't her problem, but she was curious. Essence was the other person on campus she hoped she never ran into.
"You can put Taj in my place, but he will never take my place in your heart and you know that."
She rolled her eyes at him. Why was he in her business about who she was with? He needed to be concerned with his little side hoe who probably was sleeping around more than she let on. Those guys that were with her Homecoming weekend, who was there? Again, not her business, but she was curious.
"Sherry, you gotta talk to me sometime, I'm not going anywhere."
"You should, bye boy!
"I'll walk you back home, you shouldn't be alone," he said, still at her side. "Where is this little boyfriend of yours?"
"I don't need anyone to walk me a few blocks. Why are you still harassing me? Essence isn't giving you the attention you need?"
"She's not you."
If this boy did not leave her ass alone, she would get physical with him and that was not her. There were almost to her house, so maybe he would leave her alone then. What if someone saw them together? The school was huge, but the Black community was a gossipy bunch. They would pretend they knew what was going on in her life and think she was back with Donte.
"Donte, I have moved on, and so have you, with Essence. We can never be what we were before, it's just over."
Donte did not say anything after that. They walked quietly till they made it to the house. He walked up to the door with her while she took out her key to unlock the door.
"Sherry, it's not over. I know he's not making you feel like how I make you feel, I know that." Donte was too close to her, and having him so close had her hormones popping. Donte was great in bed and they had mastered each other's bodies. Sex with him was better than any of the guys she had been with. She thought that was because they were madly in love with each other.
Maybe not.
It was just sex, and she was not that desperate to fall for Donte again. She and Taj had not even had sex yet. Maybe he was better.
What was she waiting for with Taj? That's what she needed, some good sex with her new boyfriend, that would get her mind off the loser, Donte.
Donte touched her cheek, rubbing down the side of her face and down to her neck. He was close enough that they could kiss, but she backed away.
"Leave Donte," she said before walking into the house and slamming the door in his face.
Then she made her way to take a cold shower to cool herself down.
A/N: Does Sherry still have feelings for Donte? Can she resist him?
