Sherry's POV
The girls had one more week and they would be crossing. Once that was over she would get a part of her life back. More time for school, more time for fun, more time for Donte. She figured if they had more time with each other, maybe that would speed things along.
At least, give her less time to be tempted by the hottie.
Taj was at it again at their study session. Being alone with him in the small study room always made her feel like she was doing something wrong. She spent hours in that room with other tutor students, but it always felt different with Taj. She was going to have to let him go as a tutor student, it was not worth losing her relationship.
"Come on Sher, all I'm saying is, you're fine girl, and you need to be with a real man that will treat you right not-"
She closed her laptop and sighed heavily before rolling her eyes. This boy constantly bad-talked her man, but it was useless. Everyone knew Donte was a great catch. No, he was not a perfect boy, no one expected that, but he was enough for her. Far as she was concerned, the grass was not greener on the other side.
"Taj, you know I like you. But not like that, and you're just wasting your time trying to take our friendship somewhere else. This is our last study session." She gathered her things and began putting them away. That felt good.
"Come on Sher, I'm just being real with you because you don't know a good thing when it's right in front of you."
He was so cliche it was funny. Did that work on girls?
"Okay, Sher, maybe I'm coming off too strong." He stopped to think a bit. "Donte is not the guy you think he is."
"Right. Of course not, because you are?" She chuckled, having gathered her things in her bag, she stood from the table.
Taj stood in front of her. "I'm going to just say it. He's cheating on you."
"Right, right. Say anything you want Taj, that won't make me leave him for you. Just let it go."
"I'm not lying!" He touched her arm. "Damn Sherry, I like you, a lot, but I wouldn't be a friend if I keep lying to you. That boy has another girl on the side, right under your nose. Half the school knows it, but nobody wants to say anything about it."
She chuckled at him. "Why would you say that to me?"
"You don't believe me? I'm not lying to you. I would never treat you like that asshole. You don't believe me, drop in on him unannounced and see for yourself."
"I drop in on him unannounced all the time."
"Drop in for real unannounced," he said. "That lil girl he has on the side is over there all the time."
Now he was talking crazy talk. She was over there all the time. There was just no way there could be someone else.
"I don't know her that well, no one does. That lil girl from Galena like him...what's her name..."
Her blood went cold for a moment. "Essence?"
"Essence, yeah, her sister in that white sorority, right? You know her?"
No, he did not know what he was talking about. There was no way!
She rushed out of the study room and made it out of the library, blinded by the throbbing of her head as she tried to think. Could it be possible? Not only was Donte cheating on her, but with Essence. Essence Watkins? Her little pledge on line? The girl she was getting to know, bond with, and about to join her sorority?
No way.
Impossible.
Or maybe not. She knew they knew each other, were friends, and he helped her a lot. But he said she was like a little sister to him. He vouched for the girl and recommended her to join her sorority. No, this was not real.
