Lark POV
While most of the Black students on campus enjoyed the first weekend of partying, she stayed in her dorm room all weekend and studied. Not just her classwork for which she had a lot of, but Lark studied Mu Alpha Chi history so that upon her first day of being on line, she knew everything she needed to know. She had to stay ahead since she learned differently from everyone else.
She wondered who else would be on line with her...if she made line, that is. She was not familiar with anyone else saying they wanted to pledge MAX, but that was simply because you did not tell people you were interested. She was lucky she had an in with Zavrina, although she knew she could not tell her everything. She did tell her to be ready, so she would.
She had to stay under the radar until she made line.
She scrolled through her Instagram, checking out pics others posted of the big party everyone attended. Everyone seemed to have been there. All the Greeks, of course, probably every Black student on campus, even several nonBlacks, and lots of students from the surrounding colleges far and wide. The first Alpha party at ISU was always a big deal.
Oh well, there would be plenty of parties once she was a MAX.
She saw that she had a DM on the gram, so she checked it out. It was from Frankie.
Missed you at the party
Oh no! Why was he DMing her? She tried not to give him the wrong impression after that kiss. She did not run into him all week by avoiding the Student Union and picking up lunch at the cafeteria connected to her dorm. He did not know where she resided, so there was no way he could track her down. She went to class and she stayed in her room, leaving briefly to get food. She felt like a hermit. She missed people.
Before she thought of it too long, she replied to him.
Stuck studying, couldn't party
That sounded lame but true. Maybe he thought she was a nerd, not his type and he would leave her alone.
Need a study buddy? I could stand to keep my grades up.
Oh no! She did not scare him away. What was she going to say to that? She chewed her bottom lip as she thought about it. Study with the cutie with the light eyes? She had a boyfriend, for one. For two, she thought Frankie was hot and there was no way she could just hang with him.
No, I work better alone.
There, that was that. He would leave her alone now. She was sure fifty-eleven other girls on campus would love to study with the hot basketball star, she was not one.
How about taking a lunch break? We can meet up and have lunch.
This boy did not give up! What was she going to say to him now? He was not getting the picture that she did not want to hang with him. Didn't he go to the party and meet lots of girls he could call to hang with? She groaned, frustrated at the situation. Why was he pursuing her? She told him she had a boyfriend.
No thank you, Frankie.
There, she was nice and polite about it, he had to get the picture.
Maybe we can hang out tomorrow after your classes.
Okay, she gave up as she laughed at him. He was not going to end this at all. She had to admit, she kinda liked the attention.
Ok, maybe after class, I'll see you at the Union.
Bet
She smiled. Okay, that was interesting.
The next day, she made sure to dress extra cute, for a boy that she had no business looking cute for. She let her microbraids flow freely down her back and wore a sleeveless white blouse and baggy jeans. She hoped she didn't look too skinny, she was too self-conscious about her body. Then again, she was not trying to impress Frankie...or was she?
