Zavrina POV
Instead of going anywhere spending money she did not have or staying with her auntie over break, she decided to stay at Kenyon's place for the whole week. She had to lie to her aunt. Sure, she was grown at all, but her aunt did not need to know she shacked up with Kenyon. She told her she was staying at the dorm, which was open for students who wanted to stay on campus.
Kenyon decided to be the best boyfriend in the world by cooking for her the first night. Even though it was grilled cheese and French fries, it was food, cooked by her awesome boyfriend.
"I have better skills than this, but I wanted something simple," he said putting the plate in front of her. "I'll cook something fancy for you later."
He wrapped his arms around her and kissed her neck.
"Did you know grilled cheese was my favorite? I mean, not favorite, but the only thing I knew how to cook for myself was when my mom would leave me home all alone."
"You never talk about your mom." He sat in the chair beside her. "I know I'm not that forthcoming about my parents, and well, you know why, it's painful. But you have your mother here, alive."
"Yeah well, your mom sounds like she was a great mom, mine..." She stopped and stuffed her mouth with grilled cheese. She did not hate her mother, she even liked her mother, her mother was just not much of a mother.
"I don't care what type of mother she is, she's still your mother, the only one you have."
"Your father is the only one you-"
"That's different! And we are not going to talk about that asshole."
She shut up and ate her sandwich, not looking up at Kenyon. This was not an argument she wanted to have. She had a relationship with her mother, but it was not close as he was with his mother. She was appreciative that she was alive. She was appreciative of what little she did to help.
Maybe she should show her mother she loved her more, and thank her for bringing her into the world when she didn't have to as a young, single teen.
"Kenny, I'm sorry, you're right. My relationship with my mother is different than you and your father's. I want to be closer to my mom like you were with yours. I mean, she did a lot with the little we had."
"Do you know your father?"
"I met him a few times when I was younger. And my aunts and uncles were on his side...but as I got older, they kind of went out of my life. It's cool, I didn't feel like I missed anything. You know I stayed here with my aunt a lot."
"Auntie the truth! With her sexy ass-"
She smacked him on the back of the head. "She's old enough to be your momma, please stop. Give her some respect."
"My bad, Z, damn." He rubbed the back of his head. "Just letting you know she's a nice-looking woman. Will I meet your mom soon?"
She shrugged, finishing her sandwich. "She's coming to graduation."
"Cool."
"My mom wants me to come home after graduation...go to SLU Law."
"Is that where you want to go?"
It was one of her top two choices, but she did not want to move home with her mother. She had a small two-bedroom apartment, and though it was lovely, she was beyond staying under the same roof as her mother. Of course, she would need lots of scholarships to pay for her own place since they preferred first-year law students not to work. Paying for undergraduate school at ISU was easy, with her aunt working there, but law school was about to be her true testament.
