Lark POV
None of the campus jobs she applied to came through. She had one week to come up with the first installment payment.
She could call her parents and beg and plead, maybe she would have to do whatever they demanded her to do. How bad could that be?
They would make her give up MAX for one. There was no way she could do that. No amount of money they could give her would be worth losing the sisters she grew to love.
They probably would make her get back with Ross. Why did her parents love a guy so much who treated her like crap? She realized she was never happy with Ross, even from the beginning. He looked good on paper, but once she got to know him, she should have run away.
Frankie was more her speed and she was happy with him.
So why did she decide to call Ross and ask him for the money?
"It'll just be a loan, Ross. I will pay you back soon as I can. I'm going to get a job and-"
"There's no need to do that. I got you," he simply said. "In fact, I'll come to bring you the money this weekend."
"Huh? This weekend?" She did not need him to come to town just to pay her bill. "You can cash app me the money and I can pay my fees-"
"Nonsense! I want to see you. And I miss you. We can talk and see how things go from there."
How could she tell the man "No, don't come down, let me take your money but I don't want to see you?" She couldn't do that to him. If he was going to lend her thousands of dollars, she had to be nice to him. There was no chance she was getting back with him, he would see that. They could be friends, right? Lots of people were friends with their exes.
She did not know how she was going to handle this. Thank Ross for the money but say that was it. Quickly pay him back so that he would not hold it over her for long, try to break her down to get back with him. Worse, she hoped he did not tell her parents.
She still called and talked to her parents, but it was not the same relationship she had with them before. When she Facetimed with Crystal and Amber, they told her how their parents were becoming even stricter with them, dictating where they would go to school, what organizations they could be part of, and even what they would major in.
She realized they did the same for her, but she agreed to whatever they said. Her mother picked ISU for her, her father picked her major. All her life she wanted to be like her father, and since he was a Business/Accounting major she thought she wanted the same thing. She thought she wanted to work for him as she had done growing up.
Now everything was changing.
She decided instead of meeting Ross alone Friday night when he came, she could have Zavrina with her. Hopefully, Ross would give her the money and leave quietly.
"Why is he even coming? You two broke up," Zavrina said, while they sat in the lobby of their Residence Hall.
"We did, but..." She had to tell her soror what was going on. "Ross is loaning me money to pay my school fees due soon. My parents cut me off, they are not paying anymore."
"What?"
"They didn't like that I pledged. They didn't like that I broke up with Ross. I tried to get a job but I couldn't so I called Ross and-"
"Girl! Are you crazy?" Zavrina knocked on her head like it was a door. "Hello? Is this thing on? Why would you call your stupid ass ex and ask for help? Does Frankie know?"
"Of course not...he doesn't need to..."
"Girl! That man is going to come here and try to buy you and you're okay with that? What if he-"
