Sherry POV
Tonight was the big Black Student Union step show. She enjoyed performing with her sorors. Last year, when her other prophytes were there, they placed fourth out of six sorority teams, beating out some of the bigger teams.
This year, they went bigger and better, with props and costumes. After weeks of practice, they were ready.
Using all the hot music that was out, that kept the crowd hype and screaming out for them. She was a bit worried about Lark, her first time doing this, but in the last few rehearsals, she showed out. As a neophyte, they always gave them several solos and Lark was up for the task.
There were seven sorority teams this year, some from ISU, and some that came into town to compete for the large prize money. First place was fifteen hundred dollars. Second was one thousand dollars, and third was five hundred dollars. It cost a hundred dollars per team to supply, but with costumes and props, they spent close to five hundred, so if they won third they would break even.
Other teams were bigger, louder, and more well-known, but performing was more than that. It was about entertaining the crowd and showing the judges a great all-around show.
When third place was announced, she knew there was no chance they could do any better than that, so they smiled and waited to hear the other top two teams.
"And second place of the Annual BSU Marchdown...Mu Alpha Chi!"
What? Did he just say them? They were the only MAX teams, whereas there were two Delta Sigma Theta teams, and one had just won third place.
"We got second?" Jill asked shocked.
They screamed and jumped around hugging each other before they went to get their trophy and check. People in the audience cheered for them and she felt like she floated on air. This was so unreal. She knew they did good, but to beat a team like the Deltas was unthinkable.
When they announced first place as the other Delta Sigma Theta team, she was not shocked. Still, it amazed her that the Deltas did not do a one-two punch. The Deltas in the region were always winning shows. People traveled all over to see the Carbondale team that just won. Their ISU chapter took third.
"I hope no one thinks it's rigged because I am President of the BSU," Lark stated as they were getting ready to take pictures with their award.
"Girl, you were not part of the planning committee, right? You didn't pick the judges, that was Daysha, right? I felt the same way last year, but you are all clear," Zavrina said.
"Haters are going to say that is why," she said with a shrug. "But we earned this."
The money they won would go toward scholarships to deserving students that they would give out in a few weeks. It was unexpected money, so it meant more scholarships they could give out.
"This is a great way to go out, on top," Zavrina said.
"Hey little MAXs, y'all did y'all thing." Trinity stepped to them in her sorority pink, they had placed fourth, and she was not hating, but they did not deserve that.
"Did she just-" Jill started to say something, but she stopped her line sister from going off.
"Thanks, Trinity, you guys did good as well." She was good at lying lately.
"I didn't mean anything by saying that...I mean, you guys are just so small in numbers, you have to do all that extra stuff on stage to even be seen and..."
"You know what, just keep it moving Trinity," Zavrina said. " Go congratulate your man on his win."
The Alphas took first place and it was the third time in the row. At this point, other fraternities did not want to compete, There were only two other fraternity teams. Taj said the Epsilon Upsilon could not even compete with the other teams, so they did not even try. To her, it was fun participating, even if they did not win.
