As you push the doors open, soft music meets your ears. You look in surprise, seeing Missy lightly dance around the room. Quietly stepping in, you stand by the door like she did to you all that time ago. But, of course, she hears you.
"What are you doing here?" She asks, turning it off.
"Same thing you are." You shrug, smiling a little to try and ease the slight tension.
"You do need some ballroom dancing lessons." She sighs, gesturing for you to come closer. Despite not remembering much about that night, you do remember a lot of tripping.
Joining her in the middle, you put a hand on her shoulder as she wraps one around your waist, hands interlocked. As the music starts again, she starts counting one two three four, exaggerating the steps for you to follow. You quickly realize it's a simple waltz. Apparently you messed that up as well.
You notice every time she counts the steps, her voice becomes more and more... upset? Angry?
Softly, you ask "are you okay?"
"The Time Lords put drums in my head, a long while back. Constantly beating the four beats of my hearts. It drove me mad." You're slightly surprised she admitted it so outright. Actually, you realize the entire context of hearing your heartbeats 24/7 (or however that works with time travel) is enough to drive anyone mad.
"I think you, Jenny, and the Doctor are the only Time Lor-Ladies I actually like." You wince, hoping they pay for that at some point. She smiles at that, kissing your nose lightly.
Giving you a small dip, you laugh and realize how much you've missed being with her. Even if she does scare you sometimes... just being close to someone... you don't want to let that go again. Jenny was right, you really don't want to imagine your life without her.
"Gone somewhere dear?" The Time Lady asks, a slightly darker look on her face as she pulls back. You shake your head, but she doesn't seem to believe you. "You're afraid of me, aren't you?"
You shake your head again, "no."
"I would never lay a harmful finger on you, you know that, right?" Her voice goes quieter, like when you slightly eavesdropped on her talking to the Doctor.
go for it, before it's too late
"Of course." You take a step forward, taking her hand.
But... your mind goes elsewhere. All the possibilities. She only likes you as a friend. Things will get weird, she won't want to be around you anymore. The Doctor is even concerned.
Your heart says otherwise. She's worried about hurting you. You're the only one she gives flattering comments. She even chose to spend the entire night at the ball with you!
However, your heart breaks when she pulls away. "Maybe it's better I left you alone." She softly says, turning to leave. No, you can't let her leave like this. Maybe it's too late already...
"Missy." You plead, following her out into the hall.
"You don't know what I've done." She argues, her back still to you.
"I don't care."
This catches her attention. She turns back around, eyes wet.
"Why?" She whispers.
"You're a better person today, I see that." You smile. "And I forgive you."
You wouldn't loose her, even if it met you couldn't say a word.
"Just like that?" She asks, a thoughtful look on her face.
You nod, taking her hand again. "I'm not going to loose you like this." Maybe saying that was a little much, but you would leave it up to her. Bravely placing a kiss on her cheek, you ask, "now, should we go see what the Doctor's up to?"
Her eyes clear up and she nods, still holding your hand. You keep thinking back to what Jenny said, about it being too late. You just couldn't help it, you're so afraid of loosing her. Whether it creeps her out and she becomes distant, or flat out leaves altogether. Close friends might be best.
In the counsel room, she lets go, leaving you by the door as she moves near the console. The other four seemed engaged in some debate about... mermaids?
"They're real!" The Doctor exclaims, Yaz and Izzy shake their heads.
"It's just a bunch of stories!" Yaz counters, "you're two thousand years old, you should know that."
"Yaz." The Doctor places a kiss on her cheek, pressing a few buttons, "most stories are true, based on tales passed down through generations. And mermaids are one of them." She grins, pulling the lever down.
As the room shakes, you hang onto the door frame, laughing to yourself. Knowing the Doctor, you probably wouldn't end up anywhere near a mermaid.
"What are you doing?" The Doctor exclaims to Missy.
"Changing the coordinates from Skaro to where I believe you intended to end up?"
"I didn't put in Skaro!" She exclaims.
"You put in 676 instead of 686. An easy mistake to make for an amateur." She humms, backing away from the console.
"Oh." The Doctor gasps, wincing as she realizes Missy was right. "But I'm not an amateur! Even the professionals make mistakes sometimes!"
Missy just raises an eyebrow as the TARDIS lands, the Doctor immediately running out the door.
"Don't we need swimsuits?" Yaz calls.
"Nope!" She shouts.
The sound of waves crashing against the shore makes you freeze. The vision, drowning and helpless. This couldn't be the place, right? If the mermaids weren't friendly, the Doctor wouldn't have taken you here. Then again, she does have a tendency to rush headfirst into any situation without a second thought.
Pulling it together, you follow the others out of the TARDIS, gasping as gorgeous, deep purple waves with a white haze meet your eyes. A red and orange sun sets on the horizon. It really couldn't be more beautiful.
"Where are the mermaids?" Izzy asks. You see she steps away from the rest of the group. It saddens you to see she's back to square one. But you also know if anyone can help her, it's the Doctor and Yaz.
"We'll have to go under. Come on!" The blonde says, just walking into the water. The only person to follow is Missy.
The moment they go under, Jenny rushes out, then back in.
"Oh! The mermaids have air bubbles for trusted visitors, come on." She calls.
Twitching your fingers, you do follow, instinctively taking a huge gulp of air and closing your eyes. When you don't feel any water on your face, in fact, it feels like free air, you slowly open them.
The scene that greets you is... stunning. A literal bubble surrounds you, just gliding on an imaginary road deeper under the water. What does scare you is... it's literally completely black at this point. You try walking, careful in case it pops. As you do, the bubble moves faster, catching up to the others.
"Isn't this amazing?" The Doctor calls, right next to you.
"How do they know who to trust?" You ask.
"The bubbles can read your brain waves. If any harmful intent is detected, they let you drown." She calmly says.
That makes you panic. She could've at least said something instead of just walking right in, per usual.
What does make you nervous, is the complete similarity of the surroundings to what you saw. Total darkness, and if the bubble were to pop, complete helplessness.
