𝔜𝔬𝔲 paced your small room, ten steps one way and ten back, stopping occasionally to kick the wood post of your berth in frustration. David had locked you in immediately upon arrival, making you promise you wouldn't leave until he'd come to get you.

You couldn't hear much of anything happening on the top deck from where you were, and it killed you to not know what was happening. Your sword belt lay on the berth, discarded, as you switched to a small dagger you kept in a sheath hidden in the sleeve of your dress. You'd changed into a day dress, one of your favorites. It was as informal as you could get that still befitted a princess. If there were pirates, or privateers, or whatever the captain was so concerned about, it would do to be prepared-- but covertly so.

You heard a shuffling from outside your door, and you slipped the dagger back into its sheath, feeling the comfortable weight settle back into place. The door opened a crack.

"Back against the wall, far side of the room where I can see you." An unfamiliar voice barked, and your heart sank low in your throat. You moved to do as the voice said, wanting to get a good look at your opponents.

The door opened then to reveal a young man probably your age or slightly older. He gripped a cutlass as if he didn't properly know how to use it, but the way he stood proved he had at least some measure of athletic ability. Another man stood behind him, similar enough to be his brother. Yet another stood, in the corner of the door, barely visible. The second and third men had David sandwiched between them, his arms wrested firmly behind his back and a knife at his throat. Your heart sank. David was merely a few years older than you, having been adopted into your mother's family after she was grown. As such, he was as close as an older brother.

"Come quietly an' nobody gets hurt." The man in the front beckoned you closer with one hand. Reluctantly you obliged-- what else could you do with David held so? The man seized your upper arm in a tight grip. You could barely breathe a sigh of relief that he'd chosen the arm that didn't conceal the dagger before you and David were dragged up to the top of the deck.

The sight that met you was a mess. The entire crew of your ship, plus your guards, were held in various groupings by a rough group of pirates that had outnumbered them solidly.

In the center stood a fat, weaselly man who appeared to be in charge, as unlikely as it sounded. He was holding the captain's sword, who was standing in front of him with her hands bound. He appeared to be trying to intimidate the woman, a difficult feat as she stood nearly two inches taller and had the type of personality that could only be described as unflappable.

"Found 'er." The man who was currently attempting to strangle your arm said with a note of pride in his voice. "Belowdecks, just like y'said. I think she's a, a lady or a duchess or somethin'-- this dress's too nice lookin for anything else."

So they didn't know you were a princess. You fought to keep your face neutral. That would be valuable information, for sure. Your eyes darted to their ship, which was pulled up along side yours, appraising it. Smaller than this one, less nice looking as well. They weren't flying a flag, which was probably worse than if they'd've been Kozmiran. At least then they'd probably been willing to ransom, but now... you had no idea what would become of you.

The short man ran his eyes over you, and you couldn't suppress a shiver of disgust. "We'll take that'n, then. Her pretty boy here too, to keep 'em both in line." He jerked his chin in the direction of David. "May as well take the ship, while we're at it. Start movin' the rest over." He barked, and his crew hastened to obey.

Your eyes flashed, darting around the ship. But you were unable to do anything, standing helpless while the sailors, soldiers, and officers were shuttled over.

"Leave 'em tied on the deck." The pirate ordered. "Don't have time t' deal with 'em now. Heard Blind Diamond's been sailin' these waters lately, and I want outta here b'fore we have to mess with 'im." The words sent a small chill through you. You'd heard of the elusive pirate before, mostly in whispers and rumors. The one thing they'd all had in common, though, was that they all spoke of the captain with something resembling awe... "

If they make it, good for them. If not... well, it ain't no concern of ours." The fat man jerked his chin towards the three men who held you and David captive. "Bring 'em along, I wanna inspect my new ship."
