A/N: no pic because this is *intense* (and also I couldn't find a good one-)

𝔗𝔥𝔢 door opened, and you entered, the prince matching every one of your steps with one of his own. The rooms were dark, heavy drapes drawn over the windows and the only light coming from a few candles. Your eyes had barely adjusted, scanning the room for any signs of anything amiss as your feet carried you to the side of the bed. The King was reclining, propped up by pillows, and looked all-too pale.

"Are you well?" Blink asked, what sounded like concern in his voice. You forced yourself not to look at him, praying he wasn't regretting things. It was too late to undo it now. Everything was piling into place and you couldn't take your eyes away from the man, the man you were about to see die, the man you had poisoned.

The man let out a rattling laugh that dissolved into a cough. "As if you don't know," he rasped. "But I will be, don't you fret... Come here, boy,"

Blind Diamond moved closer, drawn by the man he'd had as a father his whole life.

"I didn't think you'd had it in you," The king began, gaze trailing over to you. "You either, Princess," He added, and you lifted your chin slightly.

"Can't say I'm disappointed in your methods... proud might not be the word to use, though," The man continued, attention back on his son.

"Of course not. When have you ever been proud?" The prince stood straight up again, and his face flashed with emotion you couldn't identify.

"Once," The king commented after a brief moment of silence. "Maybe twice,"

He rolled his eye, his strong jaw tightening again in unspoken resistance. "Why did you wish to see us?" He said after a minute.

"To ask something," The king rasped, and you raised an eyebrow.

"Unless it's forgiveness, I can't imagine what," You commented softly.

"No." He shook his head, the movement seeming even too much. "You may not appreciate it... but I did what had to be done,"

"Even this?" Blind Diamond's voice was raw, and you looked over to see his fingers resting on the edge of his eye patch, every line of his face hard even as his good eye shone softly in the dim candlelight.

His father breathed a sigh, closing his eyes briefly. "That... perhaps I do have one regret. But enough of that- girl, how did you drink from the cup? How was it accomplished? I must know, you need to tell me,"

"I don't need to tell you anything," You recoiled, the implication of your prince's words sinking in as you regarded the monster in front of you with even more horror than before. "You're horrible, and Louis is going to be a better king than you ever were," You said before you could stop yourself.

"Subjective," The king said quietly, and you shook your head in disgust.

"Blink, I think we should go," You said softly, turning to him. He looked over at you, expression softening.

"You go, Y/N. You shouldn't have to see this. But I... need to stay. I'm sorry. You can go back to my rooms, I'll be there as soon as... as soon as I can."

You shook your head firmly, loosening your fingers from his and dragging two chairs over from the main part of the King's suite. "I'm not leaving you," you said, making him sit.

"I'm sorry," Louis mumbled, and your frown went unnoticed as he stared at his father's unmoving frame, as the old tyrant fought with tooth and nail. "I'm sorry you came, I'm sorry you had to do this, I'm sorry my life is so messy and I'm sorry I've dragged you into this-"

You laid a finger against his lips, cutting him off effectively. "You don't apologize. Not for this, not ever," You said fiercely, and you wrapped your hand around his again and held him tight as you sat in the chambers and waited.
