𝔗𝔥𝔯𝔬𝔲𝔤𝔥𝔬𝔲𝔱 the rest of the evening, you continued carefully implementing your ever-evolving plan. You adjusted your position slightly in your seat, your leg pressed right up against his.

His move.

He responded by slipping an arm around your waist, thumb tracing supposedly absent-minded circles as he began a conversation with the elf sitting across from him.

Your move.

You bit your lip slightly, folding your hand over his warm one, tucking a loose hair behind your ear and requesting some water.

His.

He poured you some, clinking the edge of the bottle against your glass and shooting you a small wink.

Yours

You smiled winningly at him and started talking to the boy across from you, your left foot curling slightly around the prince's leg, your slippered foot carefully tracing patterns on the small gap between his sock and the hem of his suit pants.

His

The game continued all throughout dinner, stolen glances and teasing smiles, winks, touches-- each sending the both of you further into the other's spell.

Both remained completely convinced they were winning, and at the end of the night, when the tables had been cleared and the dancing had all but finished, you looked up at him from the edge of the room where you'd found yourselves, with your cheeks flushed with pride and something else you weren't willing to admit, your arms still clasped at the nape of his neck from the most recent dance...

And he looked down at you with his hands cradling your waist, resting on the purple fabric underneath the white lacy shawl, every inch a prince and a general and a pirate all at once, and now half-elf too-- was there anything he wasn't?-- and your lips tingled as Blind Diamond leaned in slightly, buzzing with the need to kiss him. You were completely certain you had won his game, he was about to kiss you and you were going to let him, even though you'd won.

"Princess..." His voice was quiet, slightly raspy even, and you felt a thrill shoot through your veins, every inch of you hanging on his every word. How he could do this to you, you'd no idea, and the thought crept into your mind that maybe you hadn't won, but at that second you didn't particularly care as long as you got to kiss him.

"Your Highness," You replied breathily, quirking an eyebrow at him, wondering why he was taking so long, wondering if you were going to have to do it yourself.

He exhaled slowly and one hand came up and alit on the back of your neck, his fingers caressing just underneath your hairline, and he was drawing you closer and your eyes were closing... and that's why you didn't even notice when the lights went out.

*

Somebody screamed, and your eyes shot open. At first you didn't even feel like you'd opened them, it was so dark, and you blinked a couple times as the hands holding you suddenly moved you behind him. Your eyes were starting to adjust as Blind Diamond barked a few choice words, and suddenly Meri was at your elbow, grabbing both of you and pushing you towards the back of the hall.

"There's a door, at the back, go through-- stables, take the horses, now," She hissed in your ear, and your hands found the doorknob as she turned to leave.

Blink murmured something again, and you could tell he wanted to go help them. But something bade him stay as he helped you with the door, closing it behind the two of you as the first soldiers entered the room. And then you started to run.
