ℑ𝔱 took hours of silent walking, before it happened. One second you were stepping over a fallen log, and then next you were falling, deeper and deeper until you finally hit the bottom of the pit with a hard thud. Your ankle throbbed as you brushed the dirt from your eyes, shaking your head and looking around. You were in a perfectly square pit, the sides smooth, tightly packed dirt that stretched about fifteen feet up to the path, where Kid Blink's head was visible, gaping down at you.
"Princess-- are you--"
"I'm fine." You cut him off, shakily getting to your feet. A sharp, hot, pain shot up from your left ankle, and you hissed, grabbing onto the wall for balance. "Get something to get me out of here." You said, looking up at him and fighting the tears that threatened to swell in your eyes at the intensity of the pain.
"Okay." The boy disappeared from view, and you felt yourself start to panic. Forcing yourself to take deep breaths, you sunk to the floor, arranging yourself into a more comfortable position. Examining your ankle and testing your movement caused a few tears to slip out, but you were heartened slightly when you saw it was probably only sprained.
You let your head fall back against the dirt, mind now travelling to the pit you were in. It felt uncomfortably like a trap.
"There's not much around. But I've found a branch that should be long enough-- do you think you can climb up?" The prince appeared in your line of sight again, but then saw your huddled form. "No, stay there." He disappeared once more and you heard a shuffling noise. "Okay, stay very very still," You heard him say, and then something was sliding into the pit, nearly hitting you as the end lodged between the wall and bottom across from you.
"You nearly hit me!"
"Sorry! Sorry! I didn't though, right?"
You huffed in exasperation, shakily getting to your feet, one hand on the log he'd slid in for support. "I'm supposed to climb this?" Looking at it, it didn't seem too impossible. There were stubs where branches had broken off, and if you'd been uninjured you could have done it in no time. But the mere idea of climbing up caused your foot to throb. But what else could you do?
"Here, I'll come down and help you." Before you could stop him Blind Diamond had scrambled easily down the log. Easily, that is, until his foot hit a rotten patch and the log cracked clean in half. Luckily he was only a few feet from the ground... but it was clear neither of you was getting out that way.
"You-" You started, about to call him some very choice words, but one look at him melted them away. He looked scared. More scared than you'd seen him before; and that sent a chill down your spine.
"Blink?" You asked softly, needing to know why he looked so... ashen. "What is it?"
"Besides the obvious?"
"Yes, of course."
He shook his head, clearing the thoughts from his mind. Immediately his face lightened- though there was still a shadow. "Nothing. Besides the obvious. Let's take a look at your ankle, see if we can fix it enough to work on getting out of here, yeah?"
"Okay." You left it for now- your ankle really did hurt. "I think it's only sprained." You carefully eased to a seated position, uninjured leg bent at the knee. The prince knelt next to you, pulling a cloak from his pack and tearing off a strip.
"Wait. We need to set it first." You said through gritted teeth, adjusting your position.
"I don't want to hurt you-"
"It will hurt worse if you don't do it now." You snapped. He nodded and didn't argue further, arranging your foot as gently as he could.
You muttered some things under your breath, shutting your eyes tightly against the pain.
"What was that?"
"You don't wanna know. You can wrap it now." You managed, peeking open one eyelid to watch the captain carefully crisscross the fabric around your ankle.
"There, how's that?"
"Not too bad." It was a lie- but the pain was more manageable now.
He could tell, but he didn't press you. "Okay, now we have to figure out how to get out."
"You should have just gone for help. Instead of messing around with trying to get me out."
"I wasn't about to leave you. Not in these woods."
"What's in these woods?" You asked, suddenly listening more intently.
"Nothing. Now."
"Now as in these days or now as in this time?"
His non answer was answer enough as you let out a long breath. "What's in these woods at night, Blink?"
"Things." His answer was evasive, and you didn't like it.
"What sort of things?"
"Things that I'm not going to tell you about, Princess, not now. Not while we're sitting ducks out here with nothing to do about it." He said softly. "It's better not to know. And- don't worry about it. We're near the village now. This must be one of their traps. They should check them regularly."
"Unless they do it in the morning." You responded with his unsaid thought.
"Yes." He admitted after a second, drawing the second cloak from your bag and adjusting it around you. You brushed his hands away.
"You didn't think to tell me about this, before we set off through these woods?!"
"I thought we'd make it in time."
You rolled your eyes, making sure he saw. "Oh, that's alright then." You scooted a little bit away from him, and immediately regretted it. He was warm, and you were cold, and your foot hurt. He saw your hesitation and drew you back, sliding an arm around you so you were nestled against him.
"I'm sorry I yelled at you." You mumbled after a second.
"I'm sorry I didn't tell you everything." He replied as you rested your head against his shoulder.
You opened your mouth to speak, but a voice sounded before you could.
"Well, isn't this sweet."
