A/N: HELLO LONG TIME NO UPDATE I'M VERY SORRY I HAD SEVERE WRITERS BLOCK but anyway have a chapter even if it's only 700+ words

𝔖𝔲𝔫𝔲𝔭 the next morning found you pacing irritably around the council room, your father slumped in a chair.

"I can't believe you decided this was a good idea, and you didn't even consult me," You muttered for the nth time, pivoting at the wall.

"You'd have just gone with," Your father repeated with a sigh.

"Yes, exactly!" You frowned, finally falling into your own chair. "I didn't think he was this stupid," You mumbled under your breath, letting your forehead drop to the table.

"I'm pretty sure you did," Your father said mildly. "And I'm pretty sure you still like him, for some reason."

"Oh, you're one to talk. You didn't send anybody with him? You met him yesterday!"

"He's remarkably responsible. Crown Prince, you know. And their head general."

"Kozmiran," You said stiffly. Too upset with both of them to even care that your roles were basically reversed from what they should be.

"Exactly." Your father pointed a pen at you, a pointless gesture given that your head was still pressed into the wood of the table. "Which means he's the only one who can successfully implement the plan."

The plan was for your pirate to ride to the approaching armies and convince the commanders there that the Kozmiran King had changed his mind and get them to return to their own kingdom. Possibly to secure their aid in a military-supported coup, depending on which commanders were currently there.

You'd have had no problem with it, except you hadn't been made aware, that last bit was troubling, and... okay, maybe you were a little worried for him, and angry that he hadn't thought to inform you he'd be taking such a risk.

"He should be back soon," Your father continued, checking a timepiece. "Another hour, give or take, and you'll be able to see him."

"And then what?" You asked with a frown, finally lifting your head at the unspoken 'but' in the man's tone.

"Why, then we proceed with the next step of plan." The king looked surprised you'd even had to ask, and you gritted your teeth in frustration that you hadn't been included in the planning.

"Which is?" You asked with a carefully measured temperament.

"He'll be returning to Kozmir, of course, to assassinate the king."

The words sank heavily into the air, which had suddenly begun to feel thick. The reality of what exactly was happening weighed on your shoulders, and you couldn't speak. Even if you could, you didn't know what you'd say. A messenger burst in, then, interrupting the silence as you frantically tried to gather your thoughts.

"Prince Louis has returned, Your Majesty, Your Highness." He stammered, adding the last epithet upon sighting you in the room. "He reports a successful mission and wishes to inform you that he's leaving immediately for Kozmir, hoping to head off the word that the soldiers have not followed through with the orders. He says..."

Here the boy paused, glancing from you to your father. "He says to tell the princess that he'll be coming back for her as soon as he's king, to not worry about him, and to feel free to plan the wedding."

Your father laughed a little, but you only scowled at the empty air. Coming to a decision, you started for the door.

"Y/N," Your father began, sensing you were going to do something rash.

"Yes?" You said, pivoting slightly, one eyebrow raised.

He sighed, shaking his head. "Don't do anything you can't handle," He said after a couple seconds, a niggling idea that you'd do whatever it was with or without his permission. You waved a hand airily, turning back to the door.

"Don't worry, I won't."

With that you left, rushing down to the stables and having a travelling pack made whilst you saddled the elvish horse you'd ridden here. You noted that the one the prince had ridden was missing, which meant you'd all the more need for the stamina and speed this one could give you  if you were going to catch up with him.

And you were going to catch up with him. You had to.

Before he could do something you knew, for all his brave words and bravado, he would regret.
