A/N: HAPPY BIRTHDAY FLO!!!!!!!!!! ENJOY A 2ND EPILOGUE
to avoid any confusion, this is set BEFORE the first epilogue, during the wedding celebration/reception.
𝔜𝔬𝔲 were quite taken with the decorations your family and friends had set up. And the invitations. Given that a good number of other royalty were attending, even your favorite cousin and now your favorite cousin-in-law as well were able to be there, both.
Which had, in fact, set you and Louis to scheming immediately when you saw the guest list and staff/guard list. Hence why your favorite cousin (one Spot Conlon, high-ranking guard in the palace, favorite training partner, and currently single) was standing at attention behind your new favorite cousin-in-law (one Flo Balletti, cousin to your new husband, number one in escape aid, and also currently single, according to Blink). Then the two of you sat back and watched the magic happen.
The first slip in etiquette came sooner than you'd anticipated. You knew Spot, and knew the seriousness he took his duties with. He'd told you a number of times that he was planning on having the captain of the guard's position by age 20, and it looked that way too.
And yet something about Flo caused him to slip slightly. At first it was a shift in expression, something you hadn't seen in years from an on-duty Spot. Then it was an agreement to the request to call her by her name-- they were of equal rank, after all, both being cousins. Why, because of that, he really should be sitting next to her even, on the cushions that padded the floor near the long low tables. Flo was near an end, and you had ensured there was extra space, just on the off chance...
Which it turned out was necessary. Not after a few long minutes though, with Flo cajoling and convincing and looking up at Spot who was turning adorably pink at the ears. He adjusted his hat to cover them slightly, refusing quietly her every request, and then... well.
"Do me a favor and try this cake, please?" Flo asked, holding up a small petit four and tilting her head slightly as she looked up at Spot.
"Your H- Flo, please. I'm not supposed to be even talking to you right now."
"But you are, so if you've broken one rule you may as well break them all."
"That's not-- Flo, I'm supposed to be guarding you. How am I supposed to do that with you distracting me like this?"
"Do you find me distracting, Lieutenant?" Flo asked with a perfectly timed pretty blush.
Spot's mouth opened and then closed, twice.
Sensing no response, Flo pressed onwards. "This will be helping. See, what if this is poisoned?"
"Who would want to poison you here?" Disbelief was evident in his tone as he shifted his stance, only slightly.
"Oh there could be all sorts," Flo said, lying through her teeth. "A jilted ex lover, perhaps?"
Spot gritted his teeth the smallest amount. The movement was nearly unnoticeable.
"And it would be oh so much easier if you just sat down..." Flo was prepared to rehash any of the (excellent) arguments she'd already put forth, but to her slight surprise Spot sighed and sat down.
If it was a little close, who could have known? Most attention was on the bride and groom, anyways. And nobody really noticed as the meal continued, with Flo feeding "test tasting" bites of food to Spot as it went.
But nobody could have predicted the next event, when the boy stood at the end of the meal and formally asked the girl to a dance.
They swirled around the dance floor, perfectly happy under the limelight as they did so. The attention that was on the couple in the middle allowing them the illusion of complete, utter, privacy.
And when they stepped out onto the balcony for a spell after a few dances, well, who could blame them? And if Spot let his guard down further and gave himself the freedom to press a careful kiss to the back of her hand before they went back inside, who would have seen?
And if Flo caught your bouquet and Spot caught Blink's, how could anyone have blamed them for the smirk (Spot) and smile (Flo) which followed?
And, most of all, if Flo casually inquired about an Ambassador's position the next day to her cousin, how on earth would anyone suspect it had to do with a certain Lieutenant in the Talin Royal Guard?
Even if the answer to all of those questions was yes, it was barely noticeable at all. At least, Spot wasn't written up about any of it, and if he was known to look the other way every so often for his subordinates after he was eventually made Captain, well, maybe fear of hypocrisy was rearing its head. Or maybe he'd received somewhat of a gentling effect from his new charge.
Who could tell, after all?
