𝔗𝔥𝔢 seconds ticked by agonizingly slowly, minutes feeling like days as you sat with Blink in his rooms, as his father sat across from you and you waited for the poison to take effect. You didn't want it to happen while you were there. He could figure it out, could have time to set in motion other plans that were beyond your powers to stop. But the man showed no sign of leaving as the minutes stretched into an hour.
Blind Diamond was starting to get nervous. You could tell by the constant shifts he made in his chair, how his muscles tensed, his jaw twitched, and his arm tightened around you. It was all you could do to try and reassure him any way you could. You knew what he had to be thinking, knew he was worried for you as well as how the poison would affect the king.
It was nearing the two hour mark when a messenger came, knocking on the door and requesting the King's presence, a careful reminder that he was holding court that afternoon flowing from his tongue without sounding like an order. You frowned slightly at the reminder of how on-edge everyone in the castle was, how perfectly they had to act to avoid any retribution. The King stood and bid the two of you farewell, striding from the room without a backwards glance. The door closed behind him and Blink melted into his chair, holding you closer to him.
Your intention was to get off of his lap as soon as the King left, but you couldn't bring yourself to do so when he looked so lost.
"What were you thinking?" He asked in a low voice, burying his head in your hair.
You pushed yourself away slightly, though, since you needed to be able to think clearly. "It's not a big deal. Do you think I would have drunken it if it was?"
"That's exactly the sort of stupidly brave thing I think you'd do, Princess," He commented, and you glared at him.
"Well, it doesn't matter anyway, because it's not important."
"Not impo-- Y/N, that was aconite."
"I've been taking doses since I was young, Louis." You matched his incredulous tone, lifting your chin. "All of my family has. Poison is too easy to come by, and we're targets."
"So you're saying..." He said, looking up at you with wide eyes.
"I'm immune, idiot," You said, pressing a kiss to his forehead. "But it's sweet you were so worried over a little sip."
He let out a shuddering breath. "I hate you," He mumbled, and you smiled.
"No, you don't." You said quietly, teasingly.
"No, I don't. I'm very glad I don't," He said, letting a little smirk come over his face.
"Me too, believe it or not," You said with a smile back at him. "Because I might have had to marry you anyway, and I don't think I could have stood that."
"Oh you might have?" He raised an eyebrow. "Do tell,"
You were in the midst of explaining your potential and possible marriage alliances when the messenger returned. "The King wishes to see both of you in his suite, immediately," He said stiffly, and you went still. Blind Diamond stood abruptly, setting you on your feet, and clutched your hand so fervently that even if you'd had the choice you wouldn't have let him go alone.
Your footsteps were soft on the carpeted halls, but each step you took made your heart beat louder, until it echoing in your ears. You pictured it filling the hall, the wing, the castle... you stopped in front of the doors, large and ornate and entirely overdramatic.
The messenger, who'd accompanied you, raised a hand to knock on the door. A voice rasped from inside; "Enter,"
And so you did, your prince alongside you, and your heartbeat gone so quiet you could barely hear it. This wasn't in the plan.
