Korra blinked and she was back in the purple cosmos, exiting from the shining ball of light with Raava and Vaatu behind her. When she turned back to look up at the projection of herself that was bathed in purple light from the stars around it, she realized that in comparison to the whole spirit she left with, this one felt empty.
Staring for a few moments, it all clicked for her and she realized why. This was her Avatar spirit, the part of her soul that was fused with the Avatar Spirits. But what she had materialized, what she faced Unalaq with was her inner spirit, the only part of her soul that could regain her spiritual friends.
"When we're together again, you'll realize that complete balance will be restored. A new beginning will transpire," Vaatu informed as he floated down to meet Korra.
"The universe mentioned that. Right here, actually," Korra said, looking around.
"Things will change and you must all be ready to meet those changes," Raava continued.
Korra nodded her head, a satisfied glint in her eyes. "We will. Now, let's return you both to each other's side." The spirits chuckled and followed Korra back to the ball of light. She ushered them to float in front of her and she reached out to gently grab the tendrils hanging from their sides.
"Oh, and Korra," Vaatu began.
"Hmm?"
"Don't forget about us. We still have more to teach you about this place once we are all whole again."
Korra looked up, a bright smile lining her features as she said, "Never."
Then, tendril by tendril, Korra re-tethered the two spirits, making them whole once more. Raava and Vaatu respond by delightedly swirling around each other in a perfect unison that matched Tui and La's precision.
Carefully, Korra pushed them toward the center of the purple projection before her, and like a puzzle piece, the two spirits filled them emptiness radiating from Korra's Avatar spirit. The ball of light held tightly in her projected hands burned and flashed briefly. Then, it subsided into a faint glow just beyond the closed eyes of Korra's sitting body in the Tree of Time.
Her eyes flared open, the white of the ball barely able to stay put in the depths of her soul. It poured out from her, exuding from not only the hollowness of the tree but out across the Spirit World. It moved through the portals and coated every inch of the Human World, too, gentle shakes ringing in a new era throughout both realms.
Tenzin got to his feet as the shakes subsided, an amazed smile on his lips. "Her Avatar Spirits have returned. The world's balance has now been restored." As if on cue, Korra started her descent from the tree the second Tenzin started speaking. Once she reached the base of the Tree of Time's tangled roots, Lemaya raced out to greet her, jumping into her arms.
Korra grinned madly as she shoved her face into Lemaya's hair, soaking up the comfort of the feeling swarming through her chest. "You were amazing!" Lemaya beamed as she gave Korra one last squeeze before making her put her down. "We really have hugged a lot today, huh?" Lemaya whispered quietly in Korra's ear. Lemaya pulled away, leaving a blush on Korra's cheeks that only went away after she was buried in hugs by Mako and Bolin.
"The way you turned all gigantic like that. Wow!" Bolin gushed as she shook Korra around.
"What he means to say is that we're grateful and that you were great," Mako said, squeezing Korra equally as hard until she had to blow them away with a gust of air.
"Thanks, you two, but no more hugging privileges if you're going to crush my lungs like that." The brothers sheepishly laughed as they scratched at the napes of their necks, but Korra didn't focus long on easing their embarrassment with a smile once she noticed the twins stood silently behind them.
