Earth
Fire
Air
Water
Only the Avatar can master all four elements and bring balance to the world
THIS JUST IN:
The Earth Empire has invaded the United Republic! After Kuvira demonstrated the power of her spirit energy weapon, President Raiko surrendered the city, but the Avatar refused to give up without a fight. Korra held Baatar Jr. hostage, hoping to force Kuvira to back down, but the plan failed, and she fired on their hideout. Can anything or anyone stop Kuvira and her Colossus?
When Bolin coughed, a cloud of black soot blew out of his lungs. He paid it no mind as he heaved another lump of rubble over, his eyes scanning the smoking debris for some sign of life. After the explosion, a chunk of wreckage had broken off of the initial blast and nestled right into the heart of the factory. As they quenched the sudden fires, they realized Kuvira would have never sent a blast to the southern end of the city without a purpose. So, they took to the wreckage like a sharkwhale to a fish-infested cove. Having so many eyes allowed their search to cover more ground, but the longer they went on in silence, the more worried they became that they were too late.
"We found someone!"
They circled around Wing and Wei as they lifted a slab of stone into the air. The protective air bubble surrounding Korra and Tenzin dissipated as they slumped over in aching pain. Zhu Li and Asami helped Korra out of the rubble as Mako and Bolin pulled Tenzin onto street level. They were dazed, confusion pooling in their minds as they looked around.
"Where..." Before her sentence could finish, her voice gave out.
"Just a few blocks from my factory."
Tenzin doubled over. "What about Suyin? Opal?" Still keeping her eyes trained on the debris, Kisuta began pointing frantically to a mound of brick a bit away. Wing and Wei tumbled over broken pavement, and their knees dug deep into the earth as they peeled away the rubble piece by piece. Under a curved support beam, Opal took in shallow breaths. When the twins tried to move her, she winced, her slow fingers pointing them deeper beneath the shifting wreckage. "Mom first."
Kisuta offered to help free Opal from the weight of the beams as Wing and Wei frantically swept away plaster and wood panels. The air grew thinner as Opal's protective shield retreated. Wing and We's glass-cut hands wavered over Baatar's burned back, knowing from the relative stillness of his body that he was dying. Fighting back thick tears, Wing hoisted Baatar upward as Wei scooped his mother into his arms. Luckily, she was breathing heavily as Varrick slipped himself underneath her other arm, but her eyes never left Baatar's.
The second she was free from the rubble, Suyin crawled to Baatar, clutching onto his chest like she had when Kuvira set her sights on them. "I was wrong. Zaofu is still home." Suyin wiped her palms across his face to clear away the ash and grime. Pulling his calloused hands over his chest, she shuddered out a weepy smile.
"Don't you worry, Baatar. We're going to take you there really soon. Everyone's missed you."
Kisuta gently set Opal down at the crown of Baatar's head as Wing and Wei settled on either side. Sniffles mingled with the crackles of a distant fire, and Baatar let out a dreadful heave. "Are you sure?"
"Positive," Opal murmured as she softly ran her fingers through her brother's hair. This was never what she wanted to happen. It was never supposed to be Baatar in this position.
