"There's nothing to summarize," I said when he reappeared at my door. "Nothing happened. Why did you come back?"
He had two phones in his hands, glancing back and forth between them while typing on the one on his right. "Obviously because you're too poor for a replacement phone. I won't wait until your old one comes out of repair. Here." He handed me the right one, the screen still on and a number typed in. "I have to go to work now. You can text me your summary."
"I told you there's nothing to summarize."
He was already about to go, but he turned around again and looked at me. "What's wrong?" He looked me up and down. "Something's up with you."
"What?"
"There's nothing to summarize? This is rare with you. And two days in a row."
I had to laugh. "You think something is wrong just because I haven't been horny for two days?"
"I don't have time for jokes right now, Oscar."
"It's private."
I was admittedly surprised when he just nodded, accepted my answer and left without asking anything more. And a little relieved. I almost expected another order to tell him everything, but I realized he probably didn't really care. Or he just accepted my limits.
I had an exact plan of what to do first. I still knew the phone number from home, and yes it was a risk just calling, David could take it, but I guess I had no other choice. That way I would get Maddie's number or I could speak to her on the phone right away. In fact, I felt almost ready to even ask David about Maddie if he answered.
But the first thing I saw when I closed the door and hit the lock button because the screen went off was a number pad. It was password protected. At first I thought it was some kind of test from him. But that was nonsense. He must have forgotten it himself. There was nothing I could do.
I ran to my window, but he was gone anyway. I guess I had no choice but to wait for him to call.
I put the phone down. It was driving me crazy not being able to do anything. I was about to just go home and ask about Maddie, but I was too cowardly for that. Yes David, I thought, I am still scared.
It wasn't until a few hours later, when I almost fell asleep watching a Netflix series, that the phone vibrated. I could only see the message on the screen, in the background this stupid standard wallpaper with colorful autumn leaves and a red-orange squirrel.
You can take a day off if this is all too much for you
I knew exactly what I would answer and I was burning to write it right now. But all I could do was wait. It was frustrating. But it was very late anyway, I was tired and I wondered for a second why he was still awake at all. Right, he was at work.
I put my laptop away and lay down, looking at the phone one last time when it vibrated again. I couldn't even mute it tonight.
We don't have a contract
But I need the money, I thought and sighed.
I felt it vibrate all day at work, so I put it in my backpack, away from me so I could focus on my work. During my break I saw that he had called me and swore softly.
It was while I was eating something in the small break room behind the shop, only filled with a table and a couple of storage cupboards, when he called me again and I almost dropped the phone because it was stressing me so much.
"Yes? Yes, hello."
"You're still not answering?"
"Finally," I sighed. "The phone is locked. I need a password."
It was quiet for a moment. "God, I totally forgot," he said. "Try thirty ten."
I removed it from my ear and typed in the numbers. When it was unlocked, I let out a relieved breath. "It worked. Thanks."
When I hung up, the first thing I did was to save the number he had already typed in. Then I answered his messages and leaned back in my chair.
You can take a day off if this is all too much for you
no thanksAre you free tonight?
ofc its the last dayYou have to tell me when you take the day off Oscar
im not. need the money TODAYI ignored the rest of the messages because it wasn't important. Just a few question marks and questions if everything was ok with me. Unnecessary.
