"There's nothing to summarize," I say when he reappears at my door. "Nothing happened. Why did you come back?"

He has two phones in his hands, glancing back and forth between them while typing on the one in his right. "I'm not waiting until your phone comes back from repair. Here." He hands me the right one, the screen still on with a number already typed in. "I have to go to work now. You can text me your summary."

"I told you there's nothing to summarize."

He's already about to leave, but then he turns back around and looks straight at me. "What's going on?" His eyes sweep over me. "Something's up with you."

"What?"

"There's nothing to summarize? That's rare for you. And two days in a row."

I scoff. "You think something's wrong because I haven't been horny for two days?"

"I don't have time for jokes, Oscar."

"It's private."

I'm admittedly surprised when he just nods and accepts my answer, leaving without asking anything else. And a little relieved. I almost expected another order to tell him everything, but then I realize he probably doesn't really care. Or maybe he just accepts my limits. Ha ha.

I have an exact plan of what to do first. I still know the phone number from home, and yes it is a risk just calling. David could take it, but I guess I have no other choice.

But the first thing I see when I close the door and hit the lock button is a number pad. It's password-protected. At first, I think it's some kind of test from him. But that's nonsense. He must've just forgotten. There's nothing I can do.

I rush to the window, but he's already gone. I guess I'll just have to wait for him to call.

I put the phone down. It's driving me insane, not being able to do anything. I'm this close to just going home and asking about Maddie, but I'm too much of a coward.

So yes, David, I'm still scared.

It's not until a few hours later, when I almost fall asleep watching a Netflix series, that the phone vibrates. I can only see the message on the screen, in the background a stupid standard wallpaper with colorful autumn leaves and a red-orange squirrel.

You can take a day off if this is all too much for you

I know exactly what I would answer and I'm burning to write it right now. But all I can do is wait. It's frustrating. But it's very late anyway, I'm tired and he probably doesn't even expect an answer anymore.

I lay down, looking at the phone one last time when it vibrates again. I can't even mute it tonight.

It's not like we have a contract

I feel it vibrate all day at work, so I put it in my backpack, away from me so I can focus on my work. During my break I see that he has called me and swore softly.

While I'm eating something in the small break room behind the shop, only filled with a table and a couple of storage cupboards, when he calls me again and I almost drop the phone because it's stressing me so much.

"Yes? Yes, hello."

"You're still not answering?"

"Finally," I sigh. "The phone is locked. I need a password."

It's quiet for a moment. "God, I totally forgot," he says. "Try thirty ten."

I pull the phone away from my ear and type in the numbers. When it finally unlocks, I let out a relieved breath. "It worked. Thanks."

When I hang up, the first thing I do is to save his number. Then I answer his messages and lean back in my chair.

You can take a day off if this is all too much for you
