When you first joined the Dregs, it wasn't approved until Nina insisted with you joining. You were a young Grisha, a heartrender like her, who had avoided being tested for years already. Kaz wasn't fond of the idea of hiring you, saying they already have a heartrender, one who could actually use her skills, where you barely knew how to listen to hearts.
But after Nina offered to half her pay in order to give the other half to you, Kaz begrudgingly gave in. Nina had developed a soft spot for you and would be willing to train you, and as soon as you arrived to the Slat and was given a tiny, windowless room no one else wanted, Nina began training you.
It was slow training and your fears were holding you back, what if you would accidentally stop someone's heart like you had done as a small child? It was self-defense and you didn't know of being a heartrender back then, but you still feared that it could happen again.
But as training went on, you became more confident with your ability. You still weren't good at keeping heart rates down or seducing people, and a lot of other Dregs doubted you, but you started to have confidence in yourself - you didn't really care if nobody else believed in you, you would be a great fighter. Nina believing in you was a great motivator, and the rest of the Crows saw it too, you were skilled and once you got it started, you learned fast.
You'd show the doubting Dregs too one day, you'd show that you were important to have around. They'd see.
