Ketterdam was on its most dangerous state at night. But you had had an errand to run and it couldn't wait.

You should have been more careful, there had been some warning signs of an ambush but you had ignored them. Now they were already closing in, laughing with raised pipes and you had been pinned against the wall after one of them stunned you by hitting you hard straight into your nose, and you knew that there was a beating coming, probably also kidnapping. This new gang knew what they were doing.

They knew they'd possibly get information about Crows out from you by torturing you or keep you as a prisoner and demand for ransom. But what they didn't know, was that you weren't just one of the Dregs. You were irreplaceable. And you didn't know it, but to your boss, you were more than just an investment, irreplaceable in so many other ways than just with heists. For reasons only he knew.

And he certainly wouldn't let you get beaten up.

It was over in just a minute, you barely had time to even realize what was happening as blood splattered into your face, but when you saw a familiar cane covered in blood, you felt relieved.

Kaz forced the last one up by holding his cane under the guy's chin, the beak of the crow digging itself under his flesh and sneered, "Tell your boss that if your gang is touching them even once more, I'm taking the rest of you down and there won't be but a sticky, bloody mess on the floor and walls when I'm done."

He roughly let him go, knocking him over once more to make his point even more clear, and the guy full of wounds and bruises started scrambling away as fast as he could with his pain, and Kaz stared after him for as long as he still was visible.

To you, him appearing to the scene just as you were about to be kidnapped or at least beaten up was baffling, you thought Kaz would be working all night in his attic. You just stared at Kaz, barely seeing his facial features in the dark alley and had no idea about his current expressions. You didn't see how worried he had been for a moment, and he was thankful for that. "Kaz, I..."

He interrupted you by handing you a tissue to wipe your nose and face into and started to walk back to the Slat without sparing another glance at you. "Let's go."

He wouldn't say it straight to your face, but seeing your bloody nose as you had been pinned against the wall by that pack of scumbags who thought they could just step on his toes without any consequences made him want to put his threat into action right away. He even felt partly guilty about putting you out there alone, fully aware about how Ketterdam was even more dangerous at night, but fortunately he had followed you as he had had a gut feeling of something happening to you. Even when he was scared of his feelings towards you, when he was constantly trying to bury them away, appear to be cold towards you so nobody would know that Dirtyhands actually had a heart, he couldn't bear a thought of losing you. He knew he'd just harden himself over it if you died, but a part of him wanted to feel love and affection once more. The part of him that had drowned with his brother all those years ago, but now he had resurfaced. Rietveld had just held his breath under the water and now tried to slither to Kaz Brekker's life. He wanted to fight back, but he knew it was in vain, you were quickly becoming his weakness.

And even when he had tried to convince himself to let go of his silly feelings, saying that love is for children to Inej when she had asked about you, he knew that he couldn't let you go into Ketterdam's night like that again.

Kaz Rietveld had lost someone he cared about once, he couldn't do it again.
