It was raining hard once again in Ketterdam, it had begun an hour ago, just after noon. Water ran off the slick slate roofs of the houses and gurgled down drains, bringing up even stronger stench of drainage. People walked more quickly with lowered heads, their hoods pulled over heads to keep themselves dry while some had umbrellas.

You were sitting on the windowsill at Kaz's office, watching the rain run down the window. It was almost a daily instance to rain in Ketterdam, but you still found your thoughts wandering everywhere as you watched the patterns the raindrops made on the window.

You faintly heard Kaz scribbling something, probably notes into blueprints for the next heist. You weren't sure how long you had been sitting there watching the rain, staring absently out the window, but you knew Kaz didn't mind your presence. In fact, he even seemed to enjoy it.

Finally, you turned your head away from the window and slid down from the windowsill, slowly making your way to the comfy armchair beside Kaz's desk. You'd barely gotten seated when he spoke. "Y/N."

"Mm?" You looked at him, and he tapped the blueprint with his quill. You took the hint, getting up from the chair and making your way to the desk, leaning over and Kaz traced his finger through a hallway.

"Our first target is at the end of this wall here. Do you see any exists?"

You glanced around the hallway, spotting one. A doorway that led outside, but rather than opening onto an alley or street, it opened up into a canal.

"We'll get a boat, go under the city streets," you said, though knowing Kaz already knew that - he liked to test you and your skills by having you come up with solutions yourself before giving you them.

He nodded with a smirk. "Very good. Then we'll enter on this side of the building, and use the secret tunnels underneath to sneak inside without being seen."

You gave him a curious look. "Secret tunnels?"

"Yes." He pointed at the seemingly blank wall. "They're hidden right there. You and Wylan will be situated there, we need you when we escape. This whole section has been abandoned for years now, so I don't think anyone will have thought to find the door."

"So... we just walk in? How do we know what room it leads to?" you asked, gesturing to the rest of the floorplan.

Kaz smirked. "I've got someone working on that part. There's nothing to worry about."

"Someone?"

"An old contact who owes me."

You arched an eyebrow, but didn't say anything. Kaz had always had connections and information like that.

Your discussion ended there - there were a lot of times when Kaz randomly wanted to discuss about the plan with you, and you always liked those moments. They felt special, you knew Kaz didn't do it with anyone else.

And for Kaz, seeing you standing beside him, those moments were just as special. He had felt a connection to you for years, ever since you came to talk to him all those years ago, when he had just joined the Dregs. And now you had grown to be something he thought he'd never have - a person he never wanted to lose. He didn't call it love, but deep down he knew it was just that. Sometimes he avoided you, and other times he wanted you near. His past still haunted him, but with you, it haunted him less. You gave him a reason to keep fighting to drive his demons away, and he treasured you more than he thought he would never treasure anyone.
