From the locker room, the Gym Challengers heard the rumbling din of the crowd above. Some couldn't stop talking. Others were completely silent. Heather chose the latter, so she could text everyone she needed to. It was feasible that she would want to talk to her loved ones back home before such a big moment. Ralph asked if her family were watching.
'Yeah. They will be.'
Her mom and stepdad were indeed watching from Alola. Leon had probably invited every relative in Orre to watch, regardless of who was competing; so Heather's dad, stepmom and half-sister would be there. Perry would say he wasn't watching, but he would watch out of the corner of his eye while his girlfriend showed their daughter, so she could see her great-grandpa Bede.
'People of Galar!'
The Galar League chairman's voice echoed through the stadium.
'A huge welcome to everyone gathered here and watching at home! It's the moment you've all been waiting for – when the Galar region's Gym Challenge finally begins! Yeah! You know how it goes! Our challengers will have to defeat eight Gym Leaders to prove their strength and compete in the Champion Cup! Only the strongest will survive! Now, meet our Gym Leaders!'
The applause was deafening as eight sets of feet stepped out onto the pitch. Everyone in the locker room gathered around the screen.
'It's the high-flying girl! Our Flying-type expert, Vega!'

A young woman with dyed blue hair waved. It was only two years since she defeated Yarden in a match to decide Turffield's next Gym Leader, so she was reasonably new to the League, but she radiated confidence. There were two logos on her shirt: Macro Cosmos Air and MC Flying School. The latter actually stood for Mahpiya Chihiro Flying School and had nothing to do with Macro Cosmos. It was her dad's school for disadvantaged aspiring pilots in Unova.
