Powellite Ranch, Orre

A Pokémon band played at the Treecko's Twig Saloon on the Powellite Ranch. Familiar faces and strangers alike danced around the creaking floor. Chatter and laughter filled every lull in the music.

It was a bittersweet occasion, but one that everyone there had to make the most of. It was the last time many of those familiar faces would see each other. Tomorrow, the 24nd flight of the Ares program departed for Mars.

The captains couldn't drink, but many of the anxious scientists did. So did their loved ones. Khalid's son Saiph would pilot the ship throughout the launch, so he certainly couldn't drink, but he still sang karaoke with the drunken scientists to block out his nerves. At least he would return one day. He would fly between the planets many more times yet.

If Mirabelle was honest, she was upset that Joshua was amongst the scientists going. Enn died three years ago. Now they would only ever see Joshua and his family on a screen again. Only one Ares flight ever met a tragic end, but Mirabelle still worried, especially because the spacecraft – the QSC-Magma Mega Wailord – was brand new.

Joshua wasn't nervous at all. Since he retired as a successful quarterback, he couldn't wait to leave. Even his young twins were excited, although they would soon find themselves bored on the month-long flight. Mirabelle sighed as she stared into her empty glass. Someone tapped her on the shoulder. It was Joshua's wife. She insisted on dancing with her one more time.

Drinking and dancing didn't calm everyone's nerves or grief. In fact, the noise only made it worse for Pluto and Rigel. It had been 30 years since Volo disappeared. Muirne still prayed every night, but Pluto and Rigel gave up hoping that he would ever come back. He was probably dead by now. They thought it absurd that one of Pluto and Heather's daughters, Nyx, actually hoped to find him on Mars, but she did.
