A/N: Short AU chapter in which Hyakkimaru is secretly depressed about his life

Why do a lot of people like the rain? Is it because it helps keep the earth moist and water the plants? Or is it because its loud thunders and pouring water drowns out sounds that are best kept inaudible to the ears of others?

It was a question that constantly circled Hyakkimaru's mind whenever he was alone, away from the eyes of his peers and master.

Sometimes he would lie awake at night, thinking about the significance of the rain to him. He liked the breeze, the water droplets damping his hair and clothes but was that all? There had to be more than meets the eye. Maybe all he needed was to push deeper into the hole of questions to find his answer.

Tonight was just like any other night for him. He had finished his nightly patrol and retreated to his room to rest for the night. Except, he couldn't. He felt restless and he couldn't quite explain why he felt that way.

The redhead silently sat on his futon and waited for the sky to pour with water onto the surface of the earth. He was determined to figure out the answer to his question tonight. All he needed was a little patience and it will all come floating into his mind.

The night sky was starless, not a single sparkle could be seen to accompany the glow of the moonlight.

Hyakkimaru laid quietly on his futon, carefully listening to the sound of water droplets hitting the ground.

It had begun to rain.

He closed his eyes to fully immerse himself in the sounds emitted from the pouring weather. It was slowly getting louder which indicated the rain growing heavier by each passing minute. Hyakkimaru tried to visualize himself standing beneath the rainfall as the moonlight penetrated the falling raindrops, giving them a subtle glittering effect.

It was a beautiful sight, somewhat magical too. He had heard the villagers describing the rain at night as being completely different than the rain during daytime.

The rain at night was more beautiful, meaningful and peaceful compared during in the morning. There were less people at night, places tend to be much quieter depending on the location and the raindrops often looked like tiny crystals falling from the sky.

Maybe that was why rainfalls at night were described as being magical.

It gave a sense of stepping into a whole new world.

And Hyakkimaru wanted to experience that. He wanted to wash away the gaping void of emptiness in his chest even if it lasted until the rain stopped. He didn't mind the effects being temporarily, he just wanted to feel something.

The young ninja rose from his futon, his long hair slightly disheveled from lying down. He slipped on a forest green haori and took a look at his appearance in the mirror. His red locks hung messily from his scalp and spilled over his shoulders.

He'd usually have his hair pulled into a low ponytail to keep it neat and away from his face. However this time, he couldn't find it in himself to grab a hair tie and do his usual hairstyle. If he tied his hair, it would mean putting on the mask, the facade he created to shield his true feelings from the people around him. But if he let his hair loose it would mean being his true self.

After all, how can a person feel anything if they pretend to be someone they're not?

He gently tucked a lock of his hair behind his ear and took one last glance at the mirror.
