Aegon Targaryen
I stand with Jon on the wall overlooking the defenses and surrounding area. The whole population has been brought into the fold. Everyone is helping in some way. Many have been put on making three broad ditches filled with spikes coated in flammable material. It goes all the way around Winterfell. In addition several large piles of wooden pyres have been placed around Winterfell to light up the area when darkness falls.
In the many courtyards, barricades have been erected to provide cover and to slow down the dead. The walls have several catapults on them and plenty of room for archers. On the ground, the main army will have to hold the two inner rings. Over time, they will slowly retreat behind the walls, but I hope it will cause many causalities on the enemy before they retreat. When they are fully retreated, the ditches will be set on fire by the dragons. Bran is being placed in the Godswood to lure the Night King. Ironborn and various other groups will be placed all around him to give protection. If the dead manage to get inside, which will most likely happen, the cavalry will attack from behind. I just hope it will be enough.
Jon's hardened gaze overlooks the work that has been done so far. His face hard and does not hide his own fears of the coming battle. "We have done all we can..." Jon says with a sigh.
"I hope it is enough. We should spend the time before they arrive with our loved ones. The men know the plan, all preparations have been made. There is only waiting now," I say as I place a hand on Jon's shoulder. Jon nods solemnly. "You're right. Everyone should be with their family to say their final goodbyes. Many will die..." Jon says as he turns to look at me.
"I have been fighting this alone for years. No one believed what the Night Watch said. No one sent men to the Wall. No one but you and Daenerys. I am grateful, Aegon. Truly," Jon says as he hugs me tightly. "We're in this together now, for better or for worse. This time, you're not alone. Best say your goodbyes to Sansa and Rickon. You may not have the chance later," I say as I hug him back.
He takes a deep breath. "Thank you. I'll meet you at the dragons when they come. May you find peace before in case you fall, Aegon. You will die easier that way," Jon says as he walks in the direction of the Starks.
"Right..." I mumble as I walk to Daenerys. I walk through swats of people. Those that are going to the crypts, others that make ready for the coming fight. There are also many that are praying with their family, saying their goodbyes. The air is thick with suspense, people are scared shitless, and it shows.
I find my way quickly to the room it is share with Daenerys. As I enter, I see her standing near a window, looking into the night. She turns to me as she hears the door open. "My love," she greets me with a smile. "Dany... whatever may happen, know I will love you now and even after that."
"I know, but please do not die. You promised I won't have to raise our children alone, Alex. Keep your promise to me," she says with a wavering voice. My arms tightly surround her. "I will do my best. Luckily, I won't be easy to kill. I mean, fuck, I will be the most expensive-looking man out there! Valyrian Steel armor, dagger, and now a sword! I am practically growing it on my back," I say with a chuckle. Daenerys softly laughs, but it fades away as her lips crash onto mine. In equal passion, I pour my emotions into the kiss. We part as three loud sounds of a horn are heard through the castle.
"This is it. Let's make our children proud, Daenerys. We will have stories for them..." I say as I walk with Daenerys out of the room. Determined to survive and see my family once again. As the doors open, we are met by men marching to their posts. Cold winds sweep through the air. Snow falls at an increasingly faster rate.
Winter is here.
~ Authors Note ~
Hey everyone,
Hope you had a good Easter! It is a shorter chapter, but I felt right to me so I keep it at this. Next chapter will be the fight for a new dawn and the finalisation of the story. I am curious what you think of the story.
