Chapter 19

Zane

Soon after the gang had eaten, they all walked to the lake. It wasn't a very long walk, but they soon found themselves quite drained. 

"I wish I had a car." Cole stated aloud as he hunched over and started practically dragging his feet.

Kai elbowed him, "Why don't you just buy one if you're so rich?" Kai asked with a mocking tone.

Cole glared at him. "Um duh! I'm not allowed to!" Cole exclaimed.

Zane was sure he wasn't the only one who noticed how easily the two had made a connection. Strangely, Kai was more relaxed around Cole than he was with any of them. That made Zane wonder if maybe they had already become friends, not that they all weren't friends right now. Zane glanced at the two boys as they argued. 

"Guys can we please get going?" Zane asked over his shoulder. He saw Lloyd tug Kai's arm to get him to focus, but he was too busy having a staring contest with Cole. Lloyd looked over at Zane like it was the first time Lloyd had seen Kai like this. 

"Boys!" Nya shouted as she turned around and marched to stand in front of them. The two boys froze and looked at Nya, almost in fear. "If you two don't shut your mouths and keep your hands to yourself then I swear on my mother's body that you two won't have them anymore." Nya threatened with another of her death stares. Kai and Cole quickly straightened and nodded. Nya relaxed, "Good, now let's go." She stated with a smile as she turned back around. Zane saw the two boys glare at each other, but they didn't do anything else. 

After a minute they came upon the cemetery, and they all stopped. Zane noticed Cole staring at a specific grave, the one of his mother. Kai walked into the rows of gravestones and stopped by two. He knelt down and whispered something that Zane couldn't make out. He didn't recognize the stones, they looked pretty old though. Kai stood up and turned back them, his eyes downcast. He looked almost sad. Nya gasped when she saw the gravestones' names. Her eyes watered and tears threatened to spill out. Kai looked at her in confusion then his eyes widened. 

"No, that's impossible." Kai muttered. 

Everyone looked at Kai and then at Nya. It was almost as if they had a secret conversation with their eyes. 

"Guys is something wrong?" Zane asked.

Nya ran towards Kai and hugged him. She whispered something into his ear and Kai's face took on a strange expression. He looked happy, and then sad, and then relieved. He hugged her back.

Nya pulled away and nodded at Zane with a big smile.

Zane and Lloyd understood immediately.

"Cole, Lloyd. Let's give the two some time to themselves." Zane stated. Cole nodded and walked over. 

"Does he know?" Cole asked slowly. 

Zane nodded in affirmative, "I think they want to talk so let's let them drag behind." Zane answered with a smile. Zane looked ahead as the road curved down and to the left, leading to the edge of the lake. The three walked in silence, occasionally glancing behind them to see the two siblings in deep conversation. Kai looked pretty happy, and Nya looked equally as joyful.

Soon they all arrived at the edge of the water. They found a restroom nearby and all took turns changing. The sun was still high in the sky and warmed the six. Out of the corner of his eye he saw Cole pull Kai aside and say something. Kai nodded and smiled. Zane had to admit that it was strange to see the guy smile. He had seen Kai as a cold, heartless boy who just showed no emotion, but it was now obvious that Kai had just never felt comfortable showing his feelings until now. Cole lightly punched Kai's shoulder and smiled at him. The smaller boy punched Cole back and he saw them laugh. 

Zane turned to see Pixal walking down to meet them. "Hey guys!" Pixal greeted as she walked over. 

Nya ran over and hugged Pixal with a grin on her face. Zane smiled and waved at her. Pixal smiled and waved back. Nya looked at the two and smirked. 

"You guys are really obvious you know that?" Nya asked. 

Pixal blushed but didn't avert eye contact. "Maybe..." Pixal answered with another smile. 

"Alright well if no one else will go, I will." Nya stated. She started running to the water and jumped gracefully. "Canon ball!" Nya shouted as she splashed into the water. Pixal laughed and ran after the girl. Pixal jumped and splashed next to Nya. Cole was next to take action as he launched himself into the lake. Zane smiled and walked into the water. It was cold, but not so cold that it was unbearable. Zane looked out into the distance and made out the river that emptied itself from the mountains into the lake. Then he was splashed in the face and turned to see Pixal with a smirk on her face. 

"Gotcha." Pixal stated with a confident smile. 

Zane smirked and began swimming after her. Pixal squealed and raced away. Soon Zane caught up with her and grabbed her. 

"You ain't getting away now." Zane whispered into her ear. 

Pixal crossed her arms and pouted. Then Zane used his free arm to splash water in her face. 

"Payback." Zane stated as he let her go. 

Pixal's eyes widened, and her smile came back to her face. Pixal laughed as she splashed water back at Zane. Zane did the same and soon everyone joined the water fight. 

Zane saw Nya fighting with Cole then Zane looked around for Kai but didn't see him. 

Zane stopped splashing and turned to the others, "Guys where's Kai?" Zane asked. 

Everyone stopped and looked around, soon Cole pointed toward the shore to show Kai sitting on the beach. His hair gently swung in the breeze and his eyes glowed in the sunlight. 

Zane saw Cole swim towards him. 

Nya looked over at Kai with confusion then her eyes widened, and she laughed to herself. "God I'm stupid. Kai hates the water." She stated with an amused smile.

Zane looked at her, "Really?" Zane asked.

"Yeah, back when we were kids, he would always put up a fight to try and avoid taking a bath or a shower. He always would stay out of the water when we went to the pool. He just never liked it for some reason." Nya explained, she spaced out as if she was remembering things from her childhood.

Zane glanced back towards Kai's direction and saw Kai and Cole sitting on the beach. Then Zane froze as he smelled a strong odor. Zane's eyes shot towards the woods as smoke drifted towards them. 

"Fire!" Kai yelled from the shore. 

Everyone swam for the shore and stood up. "What should we do?" Pixal asked. 

"I think someone should call the firefighters and we should head home while the ninja and the firefighters deal with this." Cole stated.

Zane nodded, "That's the wisest decision." Zane said with an urgent glance to the fire. It was spreading and fast. 

"I'll call." Pixal stated.

Zane nodded at her with a smile and started running home with the others on his heels. 

When Zane got home, he grabbed his mic and stated, "Attention all ninja, we have a fire to put out." 

Zane changed into his gi and rushed out of the gym. "Stay safe Zane." Julien called as Zane ran out. 

Ok I've actually started to get to the good part. It's about time! UwU. 

Small note: Julien knows about Zane's job as a ninja. He had figured out Zane's identity the moment he saw the ice ninja appeared on the tv.
