Chapter 38

Jay

Jay walked over to Nya and nudged her shoulder.

"Hey, are you ok?" Jay asked.

Nya glanced at him and managed a small smile.

"I'm fine." She replied.

Jay watched her as she continued walking. They were headed to the police station in order to inform the officers to keep a lookout for Kai. 

"I may not be the brightest person on earth, Nya, but I'm not stupid." Jay stated.

"Jay, I'm fine." Nya insisted as she kept walking.

Jay scowled and grabbed her hands, "No. You're not fine! Stop acting like you are. Nya, talk to me." Jay stated.

Nya looked up at Jay in disbelief and in sadness. Then she wrapped her arms around Jay's neck and hugged him. 

Jay gently wrapped his arms around Nya's waist and pulled her closer. 

"It's going to be ok." Jay whispered as he pecked her forehead. Nya was sobbing into his shoulder.

Nya nodded into his shoulder but didn't let go.

"Do you want to sit down for minute?" Jay asked softly.

Nya pulled away and looked up at him, "No, we need to hurry." She answered. "Thanks Jay." She added as she brushed away her tears.

Jay nodded and smiled at her.

"Of course. We'll keep an eye out." The commissioner assured.

Nya smiled gratefully. "Thank you, sir." Nya stated.

The commissioner nodded and turned to leave.

Jay sighed as he and Nya left. More and more people were gone by the minute. All the citizens had grouped up in the square in the center of the city as a result. The others were currently there, trying to keep everyone under control. 

Soon they arrived back at the square only to see thousands of people screaming, crying, and violently hitting things. 

"Everyone, calm down! Please!" Lloyd shouted. His mask was on, but Jay could tell that he wasn't doing too well.

Jay looked over at Nya who was looking at Cole. Jay followed her gaze and sadly watched as Cole sat down on the ground. He looked downright depressed.

Jay decided to take the initiative and he walked over to Cole, he sat down next to him.

"Hey man. How are you?" Jay asked slowly.

Cole sighed and looked over at Jay. "I don't know what to do..." Cole muttered.

"Well, I bet Lloyd and Zane could use your help. The kids have been freaking out so that's another thing, I know your good with kids." Jay offered.

"That's not what I meant." Cole stated.

Jay put a hand on Cole's shoulder. "We're all worried about him. We'll get him back." Jay stated confidently, though he wasn't too sure.

"Get who back?" Someone asked.

Jay looked over and he stared in disbelief. Cole shot up from his position next to Jay and looked at the person who was standing there with a hopeful expression.

"Kai?" Cole asked uncertainly.

"Um yeah?" Kai took a few steps forward. 

Jay saw Nya rush over and embrace Kai.

"Oh my god thank the first Spinjitsu Master you're alive!" Nya exclaimed.

Jay stood up as Cole slowly walked forward. 

"How did you get away?" Cole asked.

Kai frowned, "I don't really understand myself. He had let me go, which didn't seem right. So, I followed him out until I came upon an empty room. After that a bunch of shadows came after me and I barely escaped with my life." Kai explained.

Jay nodded, "Well, it's good to have you back. We need to talk to you." Jay stated.

Kai nodded and followed Jay as they walked to find Lloyd and Zane in the crowd. 

Jay glanced over at Cole and frowned when he saw Cole's expression.

"What's on your mind?" Jay whispered.

Cole looked over at him and faked a smile, "Oh nothing. Just a lot going on...trying to make sense of it all." Cole answered.

Jay looked at Kai who was talking to Nya. Everything seemed normal to him...so why was Cole acting so weird?

"Lloyd, Zane!" Cole called.

The two other ninjas came out of the crowd and held a surprised expression when they saw Kai.

"Kai?" Lloyd asked. He quickly walked over and hugged him. "I'm so glad you're ok!" He added.

Zane smiled and nodded at Kai in greeting.

Jay noticed that everyone seemed immediately relieved, except for Cole that is. 

"Jay said we needed to talk?" Kai asked.

Lloyd nodded, "Let's go someplace private." Lloyd proposed.

Everyone agreed and they had the police take their place in restraining the crowds.

Soon they reached their clearing. "Kai, you're the only one that can beat Alptraum. You are the only one out of all six of us that can resist his powers. That's why Alptraum wanted you in the first place." Nya stated

Kai frowned and shook his head, "That doesn't seem right. He let me escape." Kai stated.

"Do you have any idea why?" Zane asked.

Kai shook his head.

"Did he say anything to you?" Jay asked.

Kai looked thoughtful for a moment. "Well, he did keep mentioning something about joining him and a battle?" Kai answered.

"Well that totally helps." Cole declared sarcastically. 

Jay looked at him in concern while Lloyd turned to Cole.

"What's with you?" Lloyd asked harshly.

Cole looked up at Lloyd and glared at him, "What do you mean?" Cole asked.

"Aren't you happy that Kai's back?" Lloyd asked.

Cole hesitated and looked over at Kai who looked back with a blank expression.

Jay watched as Cole's expression changed from sadness to anger to fear to worry to guilt then to hopelessness.

"Yeah, I'm glad he's back." Cole muttered as he turned and walked away.

Jay watched as Cole left. "Something's definitely not right." Jay thought.

Nya started talking in order to bring the mood back up, but Jay ignored them. Cole was his best friend, and he was determined to find out what was going on.
