Chapter 33

Cole

Cole woke up to find him in his bed with Kai still leaning against him. Cole smiled as he watched Kai's chest slowly rise and fall. Cole turned his attention to Kai's sleeping face where his cheek rested against Cole's shoulder. Kai's hair fell below his forehead, giving him a soft look. Cole gently brushed the hair away and smiled again as Kai's mouth twitched. Cole chuckled and climbed out of the bed as Kai yawned and his eyes cracked open. 

Cole walked into his closet and glanced at his comm which was blinking. He quickly pressed a button and listened as he played a message Energy had sent him yesterday. He sighed when Energy said that they'd leave that morning. 

Cole turned to walk back out of his closet but froze when he saw Kai standing there with a smirk. "Not very ninja like, eh?" Kai asked.

Cole smiled sheepishly. "I was going to tell you, but I guess I don't have too now." Cole stated with a smile.

Kai's attention drifted to the comm in Cole's hand. "What did they say?" Kai asked.

Cole sighed, "Me, Ice, and Water are headed down to the dungeon in about an hour." Cole replied sadly.

Kai frowned. "How much did I miss?" Kai asked quietly.

"A lot, but Jay will fill you in on it I guess." Cole answered.

Kai returned his gaze to Cole, "They all know?" Kai asked again.

"So many questions." Cole laughed as he shook his head. "Yeah, and by the way. I kinda figured this out, but I wanted to let you know...Water is Nya." Cole added.

Kai stared for a second and then sighed, "Ok that makes a lot of sense." Kai laughed, then he groaned and clutched his stomach.

That was when Cole remembered that Kai was hurt. "Idiot!" Cole shouted as he picked up Kai and took him back to the bed. "You shouldn't be out of bed." Cole scolded.

Kai rolled his eyes but gasped in pain. 

"Maybe I shouldn't go..." Cole muttered.

Kai gently shoved Cole's arm. "Don't let me get in the way. You still have a job to do. Energy or Jay can take care of me...or I can just go to the hospital." Kai stated.

Cole slowly nodded but he was still worried.

Kai grabbed Cole and pulled him closer. "Hey, don't worry. It's not like I'm going anywhere." Kai said.

Cole nodded as Kai pushed their lips together. Sparks climbed up Cole's spine as Cole kissed back. Cole opened his eyes to see Kai's closed. Cole smiled through their kiss. Kai's lips were soft and warm. Kai broke the kiss and smiled, "I should be the one who's worried." Kai joked.

Cole looked into Kai's eyes. Though Kai had meant it as a joke, Cole saw worry and fear in his eyes. Something he'd never seen before. Cole gave Kai a quick peck on the cheek. "I'll come back to you. I promise." Cole whispered to Kai.

Kai smiled and hugged Cole. Cole gently returned it and stood up to get ready to leave. Cole walked back into his closet and changed into his gi. Walking out, Cole looked at Kai sadly. He didn't want to leave him. Kai smiled reassuringly, but there was still doubt lurking behind his eyes. 

"Just be careful." Kai stated.

Cole nodded, "Course. When have I not?" Cole asked. Then he turned and jumped off his porch before he could change his mind. He raced towards the clearing.

Cole stopped short when he saw a massive vehicle sitting in the clearing. He stared at it and whistled. 

"Where did this beauty come from?" Cole asked.

Ice turned to him and tossed him the remote he was holding. "This." Ice answered.

Cole smiled. "Energy, you better show me that secret base when this is all over." Cole stated.

Energy shrugged, "Why not?" Energy asked.

Nya ran and jumped into the vehicle and relaxed as she felt the wheel in her hands. "Ready?" She asked.

Cole nodded, "You bet. Let's go kick some nightmare butt." Cole answered as he jumped in the shotgun seat.

Ice smiled and sat behind Cole.

"Good luck guys. Come back alive." Energy stated.

Nya nodded, "See you later Greenie!" She shouted as she closed the hatch to the vehicle and drove towards the mountain. She pulled a lever, and the front spike began to rotate, revealing large teeth. She pressed the gas and launched off of a rock which sent the machine in a downward dive. The spike dug down and soon they were tunneling underground.

"Sweet." Nya muttered.

Cole smirked under his mask. "Classic. You know if it wasn't for who knows what I would've thought you were Kai's sister." Cole stated.

Nya pulled off her mask and smiled. "I kinda gave it away huh?" She asked.

"I have a strange feeling we all know each other in real life." Cole muttered.

"Same!" Nya exclaimed.

Ice sighed, "I already know who all of you are. It was quite obvious from your personalities, isn't that right Cole?" Ice asked.

Cole grinned and pulled off his own mask.

Nya's jaw dropped. "Zane! You just gave away our identities!" Nya exclaimed with sarcasm.

The three friends laughed. "We're about to head into the pits of hell and we're revealing our identities." Cole laughed.

Zane pulled off his mask and chuckled, "Maybe, but I'm glad that we're going together as not only comrades, but friends." He stated.

"Preach!" Nya shouted as she turned left with Cole's directions.

Cole smiled as did Zane. Everyone fell silent and let Nya drive. It took a solid thirty minutes to reach the depth that was necessary to find the dungeon. 

"Ok, it should be around her-" Cole stopped as they heard a deep grinding and the vehicle shuddered. "Welp here we are." Cole finished.

Nya shut off the rotation of the spike and opened the hatch. 

Cole jumped out and looked from the way they had come. It was a deep tunnel and was perfectly cut. He put his hand on the side of the tunnel and closed his eyes. He heard a silent hum, or more accurately he felt a silent hum. The earth vibrated around him. He felt powerful...and at the same time vulnerable. 

He turned back to their destination to see a thick wall of obsidian. Cole put his hands on it and took a deep breath as he shoved his hands into the rock. His hands flew in the wall like he was punching through paper. He began slowly widening the hole with his hands until it was wide enough to crawl through. 

"Ladies first." Cole stated as he gestured for Nya to crawl through.

Nya smirked and pulled her mask back over her head. She started to crawl through. Zane also put his mask back on and crawled in after her.

Cole sighed, "See you soon Kai." He whispered. Then he crawled through the hole.
