Chapter 40

Kai

Kai hated being stuck in a body he couldn't even control. It was like one of those virtual reality movies where you were there but couldn't actually do anything. 

What hurt Kai the most was the fact that all of his friends, even Nya, thought that Alptraum was actually Kai. Kai saw and heard everything that Alptraum said and did, and he also knew what the others said and did. 

Kai had already broken-down multiple times by a sense of hopelessness and that hopelessness just grew bigger and bigger.

Last night Alptraum had followed Cole out of the house, and Kai had heard Jay and Cole's entire conversation. That was what gave him hope again. The fact that Cole knew the truth automatically made Kai feel better...even if it wasn't the whole truth that Cole knew. 

Unfortunately, because Kai was currently being controlled by Alptraum, that meant that Alptraum knows as well. Which means the ninja were now in danger.

Kai groaned as he listened to the outside world's conversations.

"So, I've been thinking about it, and I remember where Alptraum's base is." Alptraum stated through Kai's mouth.

Cole narrowed his eyes and glared at Alptraum, which made Kai all fuzzy inside for some reason. Whether it was fear or relief, Kai didn't know.

"You sure 'bout that? Last I checked you had amnesia." Cole stated with a scowl.

Jay shrugged, "I'm not taking sides, but Cole has a point. Kai, I thought you didn't know?" Jay asked curiously.

Fake Kai nodded, "I didn't, but I remember now. It just left my head for a while. He made his base in the lower levels of Borg Tower." He explained.

Cole rolled his eyes and gaped when the others agreed that they should take action. 

Kai saw Jay and Cole exchange a glance and Kai smirked.

"Don't get all confident just because your friend and boyfriend figured it out. The others believe me and that's all that's necessary." Alptraum thought.

Kai growled, "You won't get away with this." Kai muttered.

"We'll see...we'll see." Alptraum thought again.

"Alright, we'll head out at first light. Ninja, be ready." Lloyd stated.

Everyone agreed except for Jay and Cole.

Fake Kai nodded, "Okay. Let's do this." He stated with determination.

Jay glared at Fake Kai and glanced at Nya. "Nya, can I talk to you for a minute?" Jay asked. 

Nya smiled at him and nodded, then walked out of the room with him.

"So....Cole. We haven't really talked in a while so how are you?" Fake Kai asked.

Cole looked over at Fake Kai and stared blankly. "Fine." He answered.

Fake Kai nodded, "That's good." He replied slowly.

Zane looked at his watch and sighed, "Lloyd, time for patrol. Let's go." Zane declared.

Lloyd nodded and walked out with Zane.

Cole stared at Fake Kai for a long time and then plopped into a chair. He sighed. "Ok, so are you going to start with the threats or am I? I know you aren't the real Kai." Cole began.

Fake Kai laughed. "Aren't you observant? Last I checked you only paid attention when cake was involved." He stated.

Cole smiled, "Yeah well when Kai's involved...I can't easily ignore things. On top of that, you were pretty stupid. You shouldn't have forgotten about the stabbing Kai had gotten because that was the first thing, I noticed about you." Cole answered.

Fake Kai frowned, "Are you two dating?" He asked.

Cole tried to keep a straight expression, but he blushed a little, which made Kai smile from his spot behind the scenes. Kai had always found it adorable when Cole was flustered, which wasn't very often.

"Not really, no." Cole answered. "But back to the main point. I know what you are, but not who you are. So, who are you? and what did you do to Kai?" Cole asked.

Fake Kai smiled, "Very well, let's do this your way. I'm Alptraum." He stated.

Cole froze. "What?" He asked. 

"I took over Kai's body. Don't worry, it wasn't a painful process." Alptraum answered annoyed.

Cole glared at him, "Where's Kai?" Cole asked.

Alptraum smiled cruelly and stood up. "I'm afraid I must go." He declared smugly.

Cole stood up as well. "What did you do to him?" Cole demanded.

"Oh, don't worry. I haven't done anything to hurt him...yet" Alptraum answered. "Now if you'll excuse me. I have some...business to attend to." Alptraum added as he turned around.

Out of the corner of his eye, Kai saw Cole frown and his face morph into worry. Kai wished he could just call out to Cole...let him know that he was alright.

Kai was expecting Alptraum to go to Borg Tower to set up an ambush, but Kai was surprised to see that Alptraum was headed elsewhere. 

Kai watched as Alptraum left the square and snuck into the sewers. Following an underground tunnel that had obviously been recently created they arrived in a large cave underground. Water dampened the walls, and the air was thick and wet. Alptraum walked into the cave and looked around. The shadow creatures were everywhere. Against the walls, sat cages. Each cage held about fifteen people. And how many cages there were...Kai couldn't count.

"What are you doing to them?" Kai yelled as he saw that all of the people were terrified.

"Nothing yet. We're just keeping them ripe for the ninja to save." Alptraum replied in his thoughts.

"You're a monster." Kai stated.

"No... you're a monster." Alptraum replied.

Kai noticed Lou, Cole's dad in a cage nearby. Kai watched as Lou saw him.

"You...you're behind this?!" Lou yelled.

Kai cringed inwardly as everyone else turned their attention to him.

"I'm sorry Mr. Brookstone, but this is how it is." Alptraum answered in Kai's voice.

Kai closed his mental eyes and tried to block out the cries and accusations of the citizens as they called him a traitor. They weren't seeing Alptraum...they were seeing Kai as the one who was doing this to them. Alptraum's words echoed in Ka's head.

"You're a monster."
