A school project. That's all Wonwoo was going to treat this as. Once it was over, it was over. He'd never have to deal with Mingyu again.
Well, that's what he used to tell himself.
Now, he knows that Mingyu will forever be in his life whether he wanted it or not. Wonwoo just needed to come to terms with this fact and accept it. He figured he was doing a pretty good job so far.
Except since the moment Wonwoo drove home after giving out his little birthday gift to Mingyu, he's had a mental debate with himself. To his surprise, he didn't regret the kiss. On the other hand, he hated that he kissed Mingyu in the first place. Yes, it wasn't a full on kiss, but it's meaning was still clear. It wasn't just a nice, sweet peck on the cheek.
He needed to decide how he felt, but he really didn't want to.
Wonwoo and Jisoo sat on the ground next to the river, waiting for their two models to show up. There was still a few minutes before it was the set time to meet, they were just early. Everything was already set up where they wanted it, and hopefully the current position of the sun wasn't going to ruin the photos.
"So, I'm curious," Jisoo said, sprawling his legs out in front of him. "What was that earlier?"
Wonwoo was busy cleaning his glasses with his hoodie. When he was finished, he slipped them back on and said, "I don't know what you're talking about."
"You're only getting his hopes up, you know. If you're going to break his heart, don't shatter it," Jisoo told him.
The other male didn't answer. He wasn't sure why he said what he said earlier. It wasn't doing him any favors, but what he said was the truth. Based on Wonwoo's own opinion and those of his classmates, he'd told Mingyu his honest thoughts. The models had to look their best if Wonwoo was ever going to get that internship. Yes, that sounds a little selfish, but Mingyu taking the initiative to steal Wonwoo's first kiss and his soulmate-less status based on a bet wasn't exactly selfless either.
"Do you know why he chose me?" Wonwoo asked. The question had been eating at him since the moment Mingyu's lips touched his only a little more than a week ago.
Jisoo glanced over at him with a thoughtful look on his face. "Truth be told, I have no idea. All I know is he's had his eyes on you since I moved here."
Wonwoo searched his mind for when he'd first seen Jisoo in school. It was middle school. Mingyu had just started school there as well. He only remembered this because everyone made a big deal over the two new hot guys going to their school.
"You're telling me it's been over five years since he developed his crush for me?" Wonwoo said skeptical.
"Yeah. Hard to believe, isn't it? Makes me wonder why you caught his interest."
Wonwoo was actually stunned. Five years. Five years ago was right after one of the worst moments of his life. He'd only moved to the middle school a few months before Mingyu and Jisoo did. Honestly, he didn't remember much from then. Did he do something for Mingyu? Was it the fact that Wonwoo used to be outgoing? No, that last one didn't make much sense. Wonwoo's been a private, closed off person much longer than what Mingyu would have witnessed five years ago.
A sleek silver car pulled up to a stop at the curb near the bridge. Jeonghan and Mingyu climbed out together. Mingyu looked just as Wonwoo imagined him when he made his suggestions, and Jeonghan's blonde hair was straightened and parted in the middle. He wore a simple black T-shirt under an intricately patterned sweater jacket with some blue ripped jeans and white converse.
Wonwoo looked over at Jisoo expectantly. "What? He asked," Jisoo defended.
Wonwoo had to stop himself from rolling his eyes. And you say I'm leading Mingyu on, he wanted to say, but he didn't because he knew it would only backfire on him. He really was leading Mingyu on, even if it wasn't on purpose.
He took a deep breath and followed Jisoo up the hill to greet Jeonghan and Mingyu. He avoided the latter's eyes, but he did catch the smile directed at him. He didn't smile back. He really needed to watch what he did around Mingyu if he was going to keep him in the friend zone.
Wonwoo just needed to get this over with. He focused on something else rather than his thoughts. Jihoon had asked him earlier if he wanted to meet his soulmate. Wonwoo was looking forward to meeting whoever who had caught his best friend's eye a couple years ago. He'd been happy that Jihoon had finally asked him all day. Yeah, this is what Wonwoo would use as a replacement for his Mingyu Thoughts. Was Jihoon's soulmate a good guy? Would Wonwoo approve? Was he as attractive as Mingyu?
Dammit!
This was going to be a problem.
"What's wrong?" Jeonghan asked.
Wonwoo focused his attention on his surroundings. He had three sets of eyes staring at him. He must have just cursed out loud. Whoops. He shook his head. "Sorry, nothing." He cleared his throat and grabbed the magazine he'd kept in his pocket. It was full of different models and poses. He handed it to Mingyu, taking his hand away a little too quickly when their fingers brushed. "You two look at this, and let me know what your preferences are for the photos," he told them. "I'll be down by the water."
The two models nodded. Wonwoo turned and walked back down the hill, not caring whether they followed him or not. He let out a small strangled laugh. Something was definitely wrong with him.
"Did something happen between you two?" a voice said behind him causing him to jump. With a hand to his heart, he turned to whoever it was. Jisoo was watching him intently.
"What?" Wonwoo said.
"I know it's not my business, but you seem especially on edge today, and Mingyu seems more cheerful than usual. It's weird," Jisoo explained.
Wonwoo glanced back. Jeonghan and Mingyu were still at the top of the hill. They had sat down at one of the picnic tables up there. Wonwoo really wanted to wipe that obvious smile of Mingyu's face.
"You don't have to answer if you don't want to," Jisoo added. Wonwoo just pursed his lips. The other male nodded expecting no other reaction. "Yeah, I didn't think you would. On the other hand, did you talk to Jeonghan by any chance?"
"No. We haven't even met up yet since the switch. Why?"
Jisoo just let out a sigh. "We haven't spoken since I got mad at him."
"And that's a bad thing?"
"Yeah. I mean, for the most part, it's not. I just feel a little bad that I snapped in the first place," Jisoo admitted. "But I'm not about to just forgive him. He has to actually earn it, you know?"
"Did you want me to talk to him for you?" Wonwoo offered. He could use this as his opportunity to get Jisoo to talk to Mingyu for him.
"If you wouldn't mind," the other male said.
Wonwoo nodded. "Then, would you do something for me in return?"
