"You're my everything, my best friend, my soulmate, the love of my life," he said.
It was the best thing he could have said. The best thing Seungkwan had ever heard come from Hansol's lips. Then they kissed. A small simple kiss.
Time proceeded to pass by quickly. Day turned into night then back to day in an instant--not even a minute had passed.
Regardless of those few seconds, Seungkwan knew that the twenty-four hours were up, and when he made eye-contact with the one person who he wanted most, he felt his heart shatter.
Hansol's eyes were still the same grey. Suddenly, Jeonghan was there, an arm wrapped protectively around the red-head. Hansol gave the blonde a nod then turned. There was someone else there. A guy, maybe a girl, Seungkwan couldn't really tell.
Hansol gave this newcomer a long-lasting kiss, like he'd been waiting for it his whole life. This faceless person clung to this other male as if their life depended on it. All Seungkwan could do was watch in horror as Jeonghan whispered sweet nothings in his ear.
Then they turned to Seungkwan--Hansol and this random being--and Hansol's eyes were no longer grey but a rainbow. There was a faint glint of color from the other figure's eyes, although Seungkwan still couldn't see a proper face.
Hansol made eye contact and kept it. It was as if Seungkwan couldn't move his eyes away, no matter how hard he tried.
The younger male shrugged nonchalantly and practically smirked at the red-head. "I guess we aren't soulmates afterall. Oh well, I didn't care for you anyway."
And off the two went while Jeonghan left small kisses down the nape of Seungkwan's neck.
Then he woke up, and the sobs that wracked his body, left him sore and more broken than ever. It was an indescribable pain that began in the center of his being and enveloped him in a dark cloud.
How long was he going to feel like this?
It'd been nearly a week since he'd spoken to Jeonghan about his soulmate theory. He was going to talk to Hansol. He'd walked a mile to get to the cake shop where he still worked. Seungkwan was ready to go in there and tell him everything. He was about to open the door when he saw it. Hansol's caramel eyes analyzing the cake display.
Ever so slowly, Seungkwan took a few steps back, like if he moved slowly then he could disappear from existence.
He hadn't thought about the possibility of Hansol finding his own soulmate, especially this soon after everything. Yes, the red-head found his almost immediately, but it wasn't exactly intentional.
He rolled over in his bed and stared at the ceiling. He felt a cold tear slide down the side of his face which he wiped away quickly.
This was stupid. Hansol obviously found someone, so Seungkwan needed to get over himself and move on. Once he accepted that, life did move on.
Days quickly turned into weeks, and soon enough, a year passed. Jeonghan and Seungkwan's status was no longer the main talk of the town, but it wasn't officially gone. At least once a week, there'd be an update on their lives.
Jeonghan learned how to run his father's company and Seungkwan tagged along because afterall, they were destined to be married as soulmates. In their free time, Seungkwan went back to an empty house and God knows what Jeonghan did.
Seungkwan had just thrown his stuff on his basement couch when his phone rang in his pocket.
Mingyu didn't even give him a chance to say something when he said, "You'll never guess what I just witnessed." It sounded like there was a large crowd in the background.
"What?" the other male questioned.
"I just saw Hansol perform on stage." Before Seungkwan could say something like he didn't care, Mingyu continued, "After the performance, he welcomed some questions from the crowd. Long story short, he's not currently in a relationship."
Seungkwan stayed stone-faced, unable to get his hopes up. "Doesn't he have a soulmate?" he asked.
"Yes, he does. His words, not mine, he said, 'My soulmate and I found it better to just be friends. Turns we weren't meant to be romantically, but as friends, we're perfect.'"
"And what do I do with this information?" He rubbed his eyes and finally collapsed on the couch next to his bag.
Mingyu blew out a breath. "Come on. You can't tell me you aren't happy with this news."
"Look, Min, I was just about to head to bed. I'll talk to you later." He hung up and groaned loudly into a couch pillow.
Somehow, Hansol came about every single day. Most of the time, his friends weren't the ones to mention him. Often, he would see him from across the street, in a store, or on social media. Sometimes, it'd be in the most random places, like outside the company building.
Yeah, a year went by, and Seugnkwan didn't spend a single day of that year even attempting to find someone else he could love.
He knew finding another would be impossible. This feeling that something was missing remained the same and it wasn't going away anytime soon. Yet, he'd deleted everything. Their pictures, his number, everything. He didn't want the constant reminder of what could have been.
Seungkwan knew he was depressed. It's been a while since he'd gone out anywhere just for the hell of it. Everything was business or being alone. There was no in between. But he didn't know how to get out of this rut.
Just then, he heard a couple sets of footsteps coming down the steps to his basement. He recognized them as his best friend's and soulmate's. God, how he still hated that word.
"Let's go," Mingyu said, yanking the pillow away from him.
"Don't waste your life pining for some guy," Jeonghan said. "You're more than that."
Seungkwan sat up, a sudden anger consuming him. "Mingyu is the one calling and telling all about Hansol's whereabouts, reminding me constantly that I'm not his soulmate."
Jeonghan shot Mingyu a look. "Look, I talked to Hansol, Seungkwan."
"Okay, and?" the other said, an obvious attitude in his tone.
"He wants to meet up with you. Talk about things."
"Why am I here if you aren't going to fill me in?" Jeonghan muttered with a roll of his eyes.
"I needed your help in case he tried to run," Mingyu explained. "Anyways, that's all I wanted to come say. It sucks to see you this way, and there's no point in watching you suffer if there's no reason for you to suffer in the first place."
"Healing takes time," Seungkwan tried to say. Did he want to see Hansol? No, he didn't. He absolutely did not want to see those caramel eyes.
"You're right. But in your case, that would be complete bullshit," Jeonghan said, making his way to find something for the red-head to wear the next day.
