Set after the Death Cure au
———
They had eventually made to the safe haven and everything was peaceful but not all is what it seems. Thomas felt stupid when he woke up, all the pieces to the complicated puzzle finally fit together as he sat on his bed.

The complicated puzzle of a certain blue eyed beauty who always lingered in the back of his head. The girl who had betrayed him. The same girl who had beaten him up and broke his heart.

Ava Paige's words rang loud and clear before she pulled the trigger on herself, filling his ears with the truth as a shiver ran down his back. It was a truth he had denied when Teresa tried to explain her actions with teary blue eyes. Silently begging him to understand.

"We forced her to do it. It was the perfect experiment to see how you'd react to that and test the boundaries. She only agreed because we threatened to kill you."

He swallowed hard and his jaw clenched as the horrible realisation rapidly clouded his mind. WICKED had blackmailed Teresa and used her past in order to sway her to their side.

They knew the unique relationship between him and Teresa and used this to their advantage, in the trials. Only it had worked and both people got hurt in the process.

He felt so stupid because if the roles were reversed, he could see how hard it must have been to do what they ordered. Why didn't he ever put himself in her shoes and try to understand?

All Teresa wanted to do was to keep him safe. Even if it meant that she had to sacrifice the friendship she had with him, knowing he would never look at her the same way again. She would do it in a heartbeat.

She just wanted was to keep him safe and Thomas had repaid her with coldness and hatred. He had thrown the remaining shards of their friendship at her and ignored the hidden pain in her burning blue eyes.

He's been at war with his feelings for so long and it caused him to project everything onto the next girl he knew, Brenda. It was wrong but it was true, he had never hated Teresa.

There was just the inevitable frustration and anger that had blinded him for a long time, it was a reasonable thing to happen due to their situation. But deep down, he always knew that he still loved her and those beautiful blue eyes of hers.

Ocean icy blue eyes he could spend hours getting lost in and never resurfacing for even a breath of air.

He hurt her but she didn't care. Because the only thing she cared about was him. Even Aris admitted the truth and Thomas still didn't believe them, that Teresa did it to protect him. She loved him so much that she didn't mind if he hated her.

The people of the safe haven were hostile towards the girl who was deemed as the traitor, hating her for her part in the trials. Had they all forgotten that this was the same girl who had helped them escape WICKED and shut down the grievers?

They apparently had and Thomas could hear them yelling at the silent girl who just stared at them. He bolted up and ran outside as his gaze landed on the angry crowd.

As if she could sense his presence, she turned towards him and her mouth parted in relief. She was relieved he was alright. Why she still cared, even after how he acted towards her, baffled him so much that he paused in his tracks.

He cursed those beautiful blue eyes of hers, twinkling with stars and galaxies like he was the only thing in her world.
Which is why he hated that everything had changed between them and now that he realised she was telling the truth all along, he felt so stupid.

A loud angry yell pierced through the air and his head snapped towards the noise, a citizen was enraged at the sight of Teresa. So angry he was shouting profanities.

His friends were trying to calm the crowd and handle the situation. A sudden glimpse of a man hurling a rock caught his eye and he felt frozen, watching the dark red blood drip down her forehead from afar as she gingerly touched her wound.

Like she thought she deserved it and it caused his heart to stop, ice cold. Something exploded inside of him, burning away all the guilt and regrets like nothing mattered anymore. Nothing mattered anymore when she was in danger.

Thomas ran towards them and saw the man about to throw another one, a fierce rage instantly possessed him and all he could see was Teresa.

Before he could think about it any further, he engulfed her into his arms and protectively buried her close. Brown eyes met startled blue eyes and he grunted as the rock slammed into his back.

Glistening tears filled those same blue eyes he missed and he softly pressed his forehead against hers, his breath mingling with hers. She was staring at him with a confused look.

As if she could not believe he was here and Thomas would have been amused if he hadn't noticed her body trembling, shaking in fear.

Her small hands clutched his shirt and slowly sank into his warmth, his embrace. He tightened his hold on her in response, keeping her close to him and gritted his teeth as another rock slammed into his back.

The loud shouts of his friends filled his ears as they tried to stop the assault and all Thomas could do was stare into the world of endless deep blue.

They both had made mistakes and he knew they couldn't go back but that didn't mean they could not amend what was damaged. The burning fire was still there and never extinguished.
