He should be happy. Thomas knew a part of his soul died when the girl he misunderstood perished right in front of him. Was it selfish that he wanted to leave his friends here for a dead lover? He didn't know anymore.

The safe haven should have made him happy and his friends that were still alive were here with him. They had survived and escaped the wicked world, freedom for all immunes. Why wasn't that enough? Maybe because he always envisioned that she would be at the finishing line with him.

They were Thomas and Teresa after all, watery images of their memories together flashed in his head. Sometimes it felt like torture now that he could remember everything about her, the girl he fell in love with twice. He wanted to forget again.

He could see a mirage of her innocently standing on the beach, her feet in the water and the wind ruffling her wavy raven hair before she turned to look back at him. A warm smile plastered on her beautiful face and adoration clear in her icy blue eyes.

The light surrounding her is soft and radiant as it glowed a halo behind her long dark hair. Her laughter is melodic and calming, echoing with the tides. He loved that sound ever since he met her.

But Thomas can't reach her no matter how much he tries. Every time he takes a step towards her, it's like he hadn't moved.  She's holding out her hand for him but he can't take it and it frustrates him. Why can't he reach her?

Then she was gone with a blink of a eye. Like she was never there and all he could see was the tides of the ocean casting over the beach, alone.

A single tear escaped his brown eyes and streamed down his cheek before he slowly wiped it away. He only hoped that Teresa was reunited and happy with the rest of those he couldn't save.

The knife glimmered in the sunlight and his heart felt heavy as he gripped it in his hands. The wind gently flew around him and for some reason, it felt like she was comforting him. Reassuring him from above.

He silently carved something onto a lone tree, isolated and hidden from sight. There were so many things he wished he could have told her but this would have to do. Maybe one day they would meet again.

A heart surrounding the initials, T + T forever.
