Finally home

I'm standing at the bus station next to Percy. We hear the lady of the speaker announcing busses. I see grover running over to us.

" you just going to leave without saying goodbye to your best friend?" Say grover when he reaches us.

"Sorry," I say , " Percy and I move schools so much? I guess we're kind of used to leaving unannounced."

Grover looks around nervous.

" you looking for more furies?" Asks Percy.

He's being ass right now. Grover looks up shocked.

"Wha- what do you mean?" grover asks.

" I heard you and Mr.Brunner talking in his office last night," Percy says.

" look...I was just worried about you, is all. Hallucinating about demon math teachers... I told him that maybe you two were stressed or something because... like... there was no Mrs. Dodds and -," he starts. He quickly stops though and turns his head, " tell me those old ladies aren't staring at you."

I turn and see three creepy old ladies sitting and knitting socks with this glowing thread.

" looks like it. Those socks are a little too big for me though," says Percy.

" not funny. You do not wanna wear those socks," says grover.

The ladies continue working. One takes out her scissors and cuts a thread.

" she snipped the string! Did you see that?! She snipped the string!" Says grover.

" what's the big deal? You don't think they'll come over here do you?" I ask.

" sixth grade. Always sixth grade... wait here, OK? I'm going to buy a bus ticket and ride into the city with you. Just wait here," grover instructs.

I watch him run away. I feel Percy tugging me towards the bus.

" aren't you gonna wait?" I ask.

" you know Grover doesn't want to see where we live," Percy says.

He was right about that.

I step into Percy and my shared room. It was covered with old dirty magazines. There was one window and one bed that me and him share.

We placed our bags down in the corner. I go to the bed and and flop down on it. Percy goes in quietly sits next to me.

I hear the Creek of our door being open and standing in the doorway is our mom.

"I left work as soon as they let me. I couldn't wait to see you," she says giving us a hug one at a time.

"Hey mom," Percy says.

" look how much you two have grown since Christmas! Oh, I missed out on so much," she sighs.

I didn't think Percy or I had grown that much. She takes a seat on our bed and Percy and I sit down next to her.

" sorry about your room. Your stepfather wanted a place where he could read his car magazines," says mom.

" he could've done that in a chair. He needs a whole room?" I ask.

My mom shrugs.

"SALLY BEAN DIP!" I hear my stepfather yell.

My fist clench but my mom puts her hand over mine.

" never mind that. I've got a surprise for you too. We're going to the beach! I rented our usual place for three whole nights," she says excitedly.

"Really?!" Asks Percy.

"When do we leave?" I ask excitedly.

" The minute I get changed," say my mom.

I watch smelly Gabe open the door angrily.

" Bean dip! Aren't you listening?" He demands.

Percy is looking at him with disgust and I was just about ready to punch him.

" yes, dear. I'll make it while the twins packs for our trip," she says.

Why does she put up with him. He's vile and needy and smells like horse shit.

" right. Your trip. I want your kids were that my car will come back in the same condition it left. Not one scratch," says Gabe looking at my brother specifically.

Smelly Gabe always hated both of us but he had a special dislike for Percy. Maybe it's a evolutionary thing another man in the house I don't really know. But it just makes me even angrier when he doesn't only treat my mom like scum but also, for a lack of better words, bullies my brother.

" i'm 12. It's not like I'll be driving the thing," says Percy.

" not. One. Scratch," Gabe says separating at all the words.

" sure thing, Gabe. It's the least I can do," says Percy.

" that's more like it. A man commands respect in his own home. The fellas will be here for the poker game in five, Sally and that dip better be on the table," Gabe says.

"Yes dear," my mom says.

Gabe gives one less snear in my direction then one to Percy and leaves the room.

" cheer up, sweethearts. In a few hours will be ocean side," my mom says.
