Piper kept the snake mens attention as they guided us through the tunnels. They kind of reminded me of the labyrinth and we know how I feel about that place.

The tunnels smelled of rotten fish, mold, and snake skin.

Annabeth slips her hand into Percy's. I stand next to Piper ready to strike at the snakes of anything went wrong.

The further we went the more snakes joined us to follow Piper voice.

We just keep going as the snakes continue to follow. We pass through a crude stone chambers littered with bones. At some point we pass through a room the size of a gymnasium filled with snake eggs.

More and more snakes join our procession. Slithering behind Piper.

I hear a persistent ba-boom was all around us, resonating off the stones.

I wake. A woman's voice, as clear as pipers singing.

"Oh, that's not good," says Annabeth.

"It's like Tartarus," says Percy, "You remember... his heartbeat. When he appeared-"

"Don't," I say, "both of you. You'll just sike yourselves out."

They both fall quiet. The voice of Gaea speaks louder: at last.

Pipers singing wavers.

Fear washes over me. Piper begins to stand taller and sings again.

When we finally reach the top of a steep slope, where the path ends in a curtain of green goo.

Kekrops faces us, "Beyond this camouflage is the Acropolis. You must remain here. I will check that your way is clear."

"Wait," Piper says. She turns to address the gemini , "There is only death above. You will be safer in the tunnels. Hurry back. Forget you saw us. Protect yourselves."

The snake people all turn, even the guards, and slither into darkness, leaving only the king.

"Kekrops," Piper says, "you're planning to betray us as soon as you step through that goo."

"Yes," he agrees, "I will alert the giants. Then they will destroy you," he hissed, "Why did I tell you that?"

"Listen to the heartbeat of Gaea," Piper urges, "You can sense her rage, can't you?"

Kekrops nods his head grimly.

"She'll destroy everything," Piper says, " She'll reduce the acropolis to a smile crater. Athen will be utterly destroyed. You believe me don't you?"

"I— I do."

"Whatever hatred you have for humans, fir demigods, for Athena, we are your only chance to stop Gaea. So you will not betray us. For your own sake, and your people, you will scout the territory and make sure the way us clear. You will say nothing to the giants. Then you will return."

"That is... what I'll do," Kekrops disappears through the goo.

"Piper.... That was incredible," I say.

"We'll see if it works," Piper says sitting down on the floor.

The rest of us squat next to her. Percy hands her the canteen of water.

"Thanks," she says.

Percy nods, "Do you think the charm will last?"

"I'm not sure," Piper admits, "if Kekrops comes back in two minutes with an army of giants, then no."

We sit in silence for a few minutes.

"Do you guys ever think about your families?" Piper asks.

Percy looks at me and puts his arm around me. I lean into him a little.

"My mom.... I-I haven't seen her since hera made me disappear," his voice breaks, "she's all I got. Her, Phoebe, and our step dad Paul."

"When, Percy went missing I was a bigger mess than I care to admit," I say, "he.... I mean he's my twin brother. My other half. And I don't know what I'd do with out him."

He squeezes my arm a little and gives me one of the most genuine smiles I'd see man from him in a long time. Piper smiles at us.

"What about you Annabeth?" Asks Piper.

"My dad... my stepmom and stepbrothers," Annabeth says, "After all I've been through in the past year, it seems stupid that I resented them gif so long. And my dads relatives.... I haven't thought about them in years. I have an uncle and cousin in Boston. I never see them. Some old rivalry. I don't know. It's stupid what keeps people apart."

(Omg I love Magnus chases. It's so under rated. I'll probably throw in a few short stories with Phoebe in them at the end, just fir my pleasure. And I'm so going one with Magnus in it.)

Piper nods. At the top of the tunnel, the green membrane ripples. I ride preparing for a flood of monsters but Kekrops emerges alone.

"The way is clear," he says, "But hurry. The ceremony is almost complete."
