Steve slammed the boot of his car shut and I jumped slightly at the noise. He turned back to me with a smile on his face.

"My car's all packed. Just need to pick up Robin on our way out."

I nodded. "And I've just gotta fuel up."

"Okay, do you wanna do that while I pick up Robin, and we'll meet at the crossroads?"

"Sounds good." I kissed his cheek before jumping in my van and putting my seatbelt on. Erica sat in the passenger seat beside me, and max, El, Will and Lucas were all in the back seats.

We had organised with everyone's parents to go camping for a few days near a stream a few kilometres out of town. We'd all be gone for about four days and I was super excited cause I haven't been camping out here in years. Wayne tries his hardest but he's always busy and there's been no one else I've wanted to take out here.

I let Erica be in charge of the music but only because I was the only one who listens to metal. When I pulled up to the servo (Service / Gas station) I gave the kids some money to buy snacks and I started fuelling up the car.

They came running out as I was walking into the shop to pay.

"I'll be back in a sec try not to spill anything!" I told Lucas who was at the back of the group.

Finally we were ready to leave and we all sung along to Erica's music while snacking.

We met the others at the Crossroads and I pulled over, jumping out followed by Erica. The others sat in the car with the air con on.

I leant in through Steve's open window an he lowered his sunglasses slightly to look at me.
"You gonna lead the way?"

I nodded. "Yup. Try to stay close."

I kissed him and then waved to everyone else in the car. "See you all soon."

We got to the campspot, which was a shaded area a couple metres away from the water. I perched in the fork of a tree and directed the kids into setting up three tents, one for the boys, one for the girls and one for me, Steve and Robin.

On the other side of the clearing, Robin and Steve were setting camp chairs up near the fire pit and making a makeshift kitchen area on the folding table.

"Are you gonna help or just sit there?" Dustin yelled at me from where he was standing.

I rolled my eyes and jumped down, strolling over to him. "You're doing it wrong."

I took the tent pole out of his hand and redid it as he watched with a frown on his face. Eventually we all managed to get the camp site up so Steve suggested we go for a swim. The suggestion was met with a chorus of cheers.

Lucas grabbed Max's hand and dragged her down the slight slope down to the water, they were both grinning and laughing. Dustin grabbed a volleyball we had packed and followed the other two down. I grabbed Steve's hand and led him to the water, jumping in and pulling him after me.

The water was waist deep on me which meant it was a bit deeper on the other kids. They didn't mind though as it was pretty clear and we could see through to the bottom. All afternoon we messed around, playing tip in the shallower area, throwing the ball around. At one point Steve and Lucas tried to make us play footy, that ended when Mike got thrown to the side and got winded.

We ate dinner around the fire as the sun set and then Me, Steve and Robin sat around the fire drinking as the kids ran around wearing glowsticks and playing spotlight.

"Jeez they're hyper." Robin said as she threw me another beer.

"Well a lot of them have never been camping." Steve answered quietly.

I choked on my beer. "What? Never? Any of them? But you've been camping before, right?"

Robin nodded but Steve shook his head. "My parents were never around. And as for the kids, well, Dustin doesn't have a dad, Mike's dad is a dick, Will's dad is a dick, El grew up in a lab, Max's step dad's a dick. None of them really had anyone to take them."

"Wow.. I always had my uncle and he tries his best, He'd always take me. I can't imagine what it must feel like." I suddenly felt very sorry for the kids and Steve.

Steve rested his hand on my shoulder. "It doesn't matter cause they have us now."

I glanced around at the kids who were chasing each other around laughing like maniacs. Max caught El and she wrapped an arm around her shoulder. Lucas and Dustin were standing in the bushes by our right, they were trying to be sneaking but we could all see their glowstick necklaces.

"Yeah.. they do."

I've been siting on this idea for ages but I hadn't written anything so the past two days I've been writing trying to get it done to be put up by Yesterday. Whoops.

It's still Wednesday in everywhere but here and NZ so it counts. Hope you enjoyed!
