Au where Will dies
For days after it happened, all Mike would do was sit on the floor, staring at the blank wall. He didn't change, he didn't shower, he didn't brush his hair, and he only ate because Nancy would come in twice a day and leave a plate on the floor next to him.
Sometimes she'd stick around, tidying Mike's room, or reading quietly on his bed. Sometimes she'd bring Dustin or Lucas, and they'd try to get Mike to engage with them.
Nothing worked.
He'd just sit there, pondering and remembering Will. His smile, his laugh, the sound of his pencils, the way he'd watch so intrigued as Mike set up a campaign, his soft lips.
Mike tried to numb the pain, by ignoring his friends and family. He thought that if he didn't let them see how sad he was, he couldn't possibly be depressed.
He was wrong.
Everyone was worried about him. His best friends, his teachers, his parents and his sisters.
When Will's funeral finally came around, Karen and Nancy had to fight to get Mike ready. Everything was a battle.
They had to convince him to get dressed, to brush his hair and teeth, to put his shoes on and get out of the door. They kept their patience, keeping in mind he had just lost his best friend and love of his life.
The love of his life.
When they got there, Mike stood in the middle of his friends, drowning out every word they said. He just nodded, keeping his eyes firmly planted on the casket ahead of him.
When he finally got away, Max found him and stood silently next to him.
"I know it's hard, Mike. I do. Just know that, it will eventually get better, but for now it's okay to not be okay. We're all here for you." She said quietly.
She squeezed his shoulder and walked back over to Lucas and Dustin, who were standing solemnly side by side. It was a very somber occasion, quite a few people had turned up. Will was a sweet, caring boy who had left an impact on everyone.
He had united his friends and family. In a way he was responsible for everything that had happened, the good and the bad. He was the reason Steve was no longer a douche, he was the reason they had met Eddie, he was the reason El stuck around. Nothing could've been possible if he hadn't gone missing.
Joyce walked over to Mike and they stood shoulder to shoulder, he had grown and was about her height now. This saddened Joyce slightly, she watched Mike grow up alongside her own son.
They stood together for awhile after everyone left, keeping each other company and bringing comfort. It was awhile before either of them broke the silence.
"Karen told me.. you've been distant lately." Joyce said carefully. She didn't want to scare him off.
Mike nodded. "It's just been hard to be around everyone. And- I know he meant a lot to everyone else too.. but it just doesn't feel right without him."
Joyce placed her arm around his shoulders and pulled Mike in closer. "I know buddy. I don't think it'll get easier anytime soon- but I like to think he's watching over us. Somewhere." She glanced up at the sky, admiring the blues.
"Yeah. I hope so. I just don't want to let him, or anyone down." Mikes voice cracked and a tear fell down his cheek.
"I don't think you could Sweetie."
A/n
I think only one other chapter I've ever written has ever made me this sad. I very strongly dislike Mike (and the other Wheelers) and never write anything for any of them so this was different.
What did you think about it? Should I have more Wheeler content?
