Harringrove <3 (yes ik the title of the book but it's mine I can do what I want.)
Steves PoV
Me and Billy were on the couch, watching Grease. I was laying down with my head in his lap and as we watched the movie he gently fiddled with my hair. The phone rang and Billy looked down at me. "I'll get it."
I sat up slightly so that he could get up, and I watched as he walked to the hall. I heard the phone stop ringing when he answered and there was silence.
"How the hell did you find me?" I heard billy demand.
I jumped off the couch and walked out to the hall and leaned against the wall in front of him. Billy's face was pale as it drained of colour.
He looked at me with fear and panic in his eyes and I grabbed his hand and squeezed it. He closed his eyes and answered whatever the other person was saying.
"Yeah.. I've gotta go. I'll let you know." And hung up.
"What was that all about?" I asked carefully.
He stepped forward and laced his arms around my waist, burying his face in my neck.
"My mum." He muttered.
"What? I thought-"
"Yeah. She um- she wants to meet me."
"How'd she even find you anyway?"
"Susan answered the phone when she rang my dad and pointed her to your house."
"Oh- well. Let's go sit down, Kay?"
He nodded slightly and I led him back to the lounge room and paused the movie.
"Do you want to see her?"
"I don't know." He said quietly.
"You don't have to if you don't want to."
"I think.. I think I want to. But I'm just so mad at her. She left me with my abusive asshole dad and-" I could see the tears welling up in his eyes and I brushed his cheek softly.
"I know. You don't have to decide yet, just think about it."
He nodded and leaned his head on my shoulder as I un paused the movie.
—
I was brushing my teeth in the bathroom when Billy emerged in the doorway.
I looked at him and raised my eyebrow.
"I wanna meet her. But could you please come with me?" Standing in the doorway with a defeated look on his face made my heart break.
I spat out the toothpaste and quickly wiped my mouth. "Of course I will."
I walked over to him and hugged him, and he gratefully hugged me back. "Thank you."
"Have you called her back yet?"
He shook his head. "Not yet but I will."
—
Robin and I were stocking the shelves at work, putting all the returned tapes back in their spots.
"What's wrong?" She asked suddenly, breaking the silence.
"Hmm?" I responded as I slid It back on the shelf.
"You're quiet for once. Usually you'd be complaining about the kids."
"Oh- um nothing really."
She raised her eyebrow at me and I shrugged.
"Fine. Billy's mum reached out to him after years of no contact and says she wants to meet him. And he wants to meet her! After all the pain she's caused him. I'm just worried he's making a mistake by agreeing."
Robins mouth formed a perfect 'O' before she responded, choosing her words carefully.
"It's his decision, maybe he just wants closure. All you can do is support him I guess."
"Yeah that makes sense. I still don't like it though."
She shrugged. "It's not for you to like. I personally think he's being very brave. When are they meeting up?"
"Tomorrow afternoon at the cafe. He wants me to go as well."
"Mm. I spose it's good he wants you there as a sort of moderator. He must trust your judgement."
I thought about it. "I guess he does."
—
I drove with Billy on silence to the local cafe. His leg was jittering nervously and I rested my hand on it, soothing him.
We pulled into the parking lot and jumped out. I pecked his cheek and held his hand as we walked in and looked around.
A pretty middle aged lady sat towards the back of the room in a booth and I felt Billy tense beside me.
"It's okay. Is that her?"
He nodded, still standing stock still. I gently tugged him forward, leading the way to the booth.
The lady looked up and smiled at Billy, it faltered slightly when she saw me and I mentally rolled my eyes.
"Hi. Um, it's good to see you." Billy said akwardly as we stood next to the booth.
"It's good to see you to William. Who's this?" She gestured vaguely to me.
"Uh- this is Steve."
She nodded and gestured for us to sit down. I sat on the window side so that Billy could get up if he wanted to.
It was quiet before Beth (A/N his mother is un named but she's played by Beth Riesgraf) started talking.
"You've grown so much."
Billy just nodded.
"I'm- I'm really sorry."
"About what? You just got yourself out." Billy said coldly.
"I wanted to take you with me, but I couldn't. He- he wouldn't let me."
"Then why didn't you call me? You never called me! Not on my birthday, not on Christmas not when I broke my arm!" Billy raised his voice and I saw Beth flinch.
I rested my hand on Billy's thigh under the table and he took a deep breath.
"Look, I thought I was ready to see you but I was wrong." He turned to me. "I'll be in the car."
Me and Beth both watched as he strode out of the cafe and into my car. She turned to me with a desperate look on her face.
"I'll talk to him." I said before standing.
"Wait- Steve! Can you just tell him that I love him and he can visit me anytime? He has two younger siblings.. and I'd like for them to meet one day." She looked so desperate and sad that I had to agree.
I waved to her as I walked out of the cafe and back to Billy.
