Max's POV-

It was the worst day of the year (in my opinion); Thanksgiving. The American holiday where every family gathers together to argue about politics, eat food that tastes like it came straight out of a retirement home, watch sports that nobody really cares about, and be forced to talk to the old people in your family that you only see once a year. Luckily Jane was spending it with us because Hopper had to work.

I was wearing the most modest, boring outfit I could put together. A beige turtleneck sweater and high-waisted loose fit jeans with absolutely no rips. I didn't mind the pants but the sweater was absolutely horrendous. Of course my mom loved my outfit so much she brought out her old camera and took a million pictures of me standing awkwardly next to the table that was decorated for Thanksgiving.

I was worried to see my family because for the longest time I was the baby of the family, but I knew for a fact now that Delilah was here, it would take a ton of attention off of me. I was thankful for that.

"Max, honey, could you make sure to answer the door when Granny and Grandpa come? I'm really busy cooking and she just called and said she was about to leave her house." My mom shouted from the kitchen. She was super stressed because she was in charge of every single food that would be served that evening.

"Okay!" I yelled back. I groaned and threw my head back. I was dreading seeing them. They would always call me Maxine every two seconds and ask about my romantic interest in boys. Granny would always ask; "Have you met a good boy yet?" and she would also say "You've gotten so pretty and skinny, I'm surprised there isn't boys lined up at your doorstep."

I wanted to disintegrate.

"It's not going to be that bad Max, I'll be your emotional support." Jane rested a hand on my thigh and shot me a sympathetic smile. I painfully smiled back.

Everyone had arrived. And by everyone I mean my uncle, my aunts (minus the one in the hospital that's in a coma), my uncles, my granny and grandpa, and my little cousins who were 4, 9, and 13.

If I had a dollar for how many times I had been called Maxine in the past hour, I would have been a multimillionaire.

We were all gathered at the table, and most people had their plates filled to the brim, but I wasn't very fond of Thanksgiving food at all. I just got some mac n cheese, a roll, mashed potatoes, and the tiniest bit of turkey just because my mom worked super hard on it.

"So, Maxine honey, where's your boyfriend? Surely you have one by now." My granny asked me in the middle of some random family discussion that I wasn't paying attention to.

I sat my fork down and tried my hardest to not react to her question even though I could've screamed out of frustration.

"I'm focusing on school." I lied. I knew damn well I was doing anything but focusing on school.

"But surely you have had a million love letters show up right? Like I always say, you're much too beautiful and skinny to be single at your age. Me and your grandpa met when we were 12." She explained. I didn't understand why she cared so much about my love life when she was hardly present in my life anyways.

"Nope, no letters." I laughed awkwardly.

"C'mon Maxine, we all know there has to be some kind of boyfriend." My uncle Carl nudged my shoulder and I almost threw up in my mouth.

"No. No boyfriend." I responded, slightly passive aggressive.

"I mean, as a teenager I would've snatched you up in a heartbeat." He joked with a disgusting raspy voice. I scooted my chair the opposite direction of him and cleared my throat uncomfortably. I felt Jane grab my hand under the table and give me a comforting squeeze. My grandpa laughed at his joke and I felt my heart sink.

"I can't believe Delilah is almost one!" My mom exclaimed, attempting to switch the topic.

"She's already such a beautiful young lady, hopefully she turns out like Maxine." My uncle reached over to nudge me again but I leaned into Jane so he couldn't touch me. He shot me an offended look, "What's with the attitude?"

My mouth gaped at his stupid question and I tried to keep myself from strangling him right then and there, "I just don't want to be touched."

"No wonder you don't have a boyfriend." He joked, but it was kind of in a rude way.

"Hey, Carl, stop it please." My mom sighed at him.

"What? She's acting like a baby and all I'm doing is joking around!" He yelled.

"You're being creepy!" I blurted, immediately regretting what I said once I felt the glare of half of my family on me.

"You're just sensitive. I'm allowed to say whatever I want young lady-"

"Don't talk to my daughter like that!" My mom sat up straight and looked like she was ready to attack him at any moment. She went into full defense mode.

"She's never gonna make it in this world Susan! She's too damn sensitive!" He shouted at her even though she was two feet away from him. I felt my eyes begin to water and I gripped Jane's hand tighter.

"So what if she is?? She has a wonderful life so far and she can't control her emotions!" My mom snapped.

"That doesn't mean she gets to act like a little bitch!" He argued. I felt the tears rush down my face and I was one more insult away from a panic attack.

"Don't call my daughter a bitch." My mom grumbled as she stood up from her seat slowly. Her fists clenched together as if she were about to punch him.

"I'll call her whatever the fuck I want!" He yelled, "Hell, she's probably a dyke or something isn't she?? Look at her leaning into that brunette bitch, they're probably holding god damn hands under that table! You're a dyke aren't you Maxine??" He turned to me and began leaning closer to my face.

"Get out of my house." My mom uttered angrily. My breathing pattern sped up rapidly and I started to have a panic attack. He turned his head to look over at my mom and somehow he got angrier.

"What did you just say?.." He grumbled.

"I said get out of my house." She repeated herself, basically threatening him at this point.

"You know what? Fine. I don't care about you or your little dyke. Go fuck yourself Susan." He stormed out of the kitchen and out of the front door. Once he was out of sight I let go of Jane's hand and immediately ran to the bathroom.
