Max's POV -

"I can't believe winter break is almost overrrr!" I groaned, throwing my head back on the couch me and Jane were sitting on.

"I hate to admit this, but I actually miss school.." Jane confessed with a tiny smile on her face. I looked over at her with a concerned expression.

"What about school could you possibly miss??" I questioned, genuinely confused.

Jane opened her mouth to answer, and then paused when my mom rushed into the living room with baby Delilah and a duffel bag. She looked very panicked. She handed me the baby and I looked up at her, very confused. I didn't even know what to say or ask.

"Listen.. Your aunt woke up from her coma a couple of hours ago and-and I just got news that she had a seizure and is in horrible condition. I know this is super last minute but I have to leave you home with Delilah for a few days.. The neighbor will be calling every day to check up on you guys." She paused what she was saying to pull a crumpled up piece of paper out of her pocket and handed it to me, "Here's Delilah's routine, and everything you'll need to know to take care of her. Now that she's older she's not as difficult to take care of." Her eyes began to water and she bent down to place a kiss on my forehead.

"Is she gonna die?" I asked, completely shocked.

"I-I don't know honey.. I just have to get going. I'll call you every night okay?" Her voice cracked as she attempted keep herself together.

I nodded slowly, still not completely processing what was going on. She kissed my forehead one more time before rushing out of the front door.

I immediately turned to Jane just to see that she was already looking at me with a very concerned look on her face.

"Holy shit.." Jane mumbled under her breath.

"I don't know what the hell just happened." I spoke as I looked down at the small child on my lap who tilted her head and watched the door.

"Mm?" She hummed softly, glancing up at me and then back at the door.

"My mom went bye bye. She's going to see your mama." I explained to the infant.

"Bye bye?" She responded, doing the little hand movement babies do when they say bye to someone.

"Yes. She went bye bye." I answered, doing the hand movement she had just done.

Delilah looked at the door once again and crawled off of my lap and the couch. I made sure to hold her sides so that she wouldn't fall. Once she was safely on the ground, I let go of her and she immediately walked over to the door. She put her hands onto the wooden door and turned her head towards me.

"Bye bye" She spoke, trying to inform me she wanted to go outside and find my mom.

"We can't go bye bye right now." I stood up and walked over to her so that I could sit down next to her on the floor.

The small child gave me a disappointed look as she removed her hands from the door.

"She will be back soon," I assured her, "I promise."

"Ba?" She replied.

"Yes, back. Back soon." I nodded and stood up. "Now let's put you in your play pin so that me and Jane can figure out what's going on." I bent over and picked the toddler up, bringing her over to a little area in the living room filled with toys that was surrounded with a plastic pink fence tall enough to keep her in there. She pouted a little, but once I pressed the button on one of her toys, she immediately got distracted by the pretty lights.

"Do you want me to stay here with you and Delilah?" Jane asked as I walked back over to the couch.

"Yes please, there's no way I can do this alone." I chuckled nervously. I was very anxious about watching a baby for multiple days in a row.

"It's going to be okay, we've got this." Jane tried to assure me.

There's no way in hell this is gonna go well.

"I hope my aunt is okay." I changed the topic unintentionally once it sunk in that my aunt was possibly on the verge of death.

"Me too. But we should probably try to keep our mind off of that and stay positive, let's try not to think about it." Jane smiled lightly and placed her hand on top of mine.

- time skip: 4 hrs -

"No!" Delilah picked up her plate and threw it onto the ground, causing little bits of chicken and peas to fly everywhere. I stood in place and glared at the child as she sat innocently in her high chair.

"Seriously?" I sighed. "Listen, I don't like peas either and that chicken is horribly seasoned but you didn't even give it a chance!" I whined.

"What happened in he-" Jane stopped in her tracks when she walked into the dining room and saw the mess. "I guess she doesn't like peas and chicken."

"Let's just give her yoghurt." I shrugged, knowing she would definitely eat it.

"What about that?" Jane gestured towards the food all over the ground.

"I'll clean it up." I assured her.

- time skip: 2 1/2 hrs -

"Go to sleep pleaseeeeee!" I begged the crying child who had been crying in her crib for at least 20 minutes.

"Just let her sleep with us!" Jane exclaimed, tired of the crying.

"But she can't! She won't sleep in her crib anymore if we let her sleep with us!" I argued.

Jane groaned with frustration and pushed me aside to get Delilah out of her crib. I watched as she picked up the sad baby that immediately stopped crying once she was in her arms. Delilah sniffled and rested her head on Jane's chest. The baby had red cheeks and watery eyes from all the crying she had done. Jane rocked her back and forth and glanced at me with an 'im-right-you're-wrong' look. I rolled my eyes with a small smile and hesitantly followed Jane as she carried the sleepy toddler out into the hallway and to my room.
